The antenna of butterflies has notches at the end, bent somewhat to look like a golf club. Moths have antennas like cat's whiskers, long and ending in a point. Butterflies live on the nectar of flowers and, like bees, help with pollination. The average lifespan of a butterfly is three to four weeks. National Moth-er Day celebrates moths and those who protect, study, and care for them. There are over 11,000 species of moths in the world, each unique. Moths and their caterpillar form are food for many animals, and they are also essential in pollination, nectar collection, and seed distribution. The Malay archipelago hosts the largest moth in the world, which can be up to 60 square inches (152 square centimeters) in size with a wing span of over a foot (30 centimeters). Moths can be extremely colorful, like butterflies. The main difference between a moth and a butterfly is its antennas. In a moth, these are fat and look like feathers or small saws. Butterfly antennas are smooth and thin. Butterflies also tend to fold their wings above them when at rest. A moth will rest with its wings open and on full display.

The Nanakshahi calendar was officially adopted in 1998, marking a significant shift in how Sikhs observe their religious festivals. Named after Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, this solar calendar replaced the lunar-based Bikrami calendar, which previously determined the dates for Sikh holidays.

The creation of the Nanakshahi calendar began with Pal Singh Purewal, a Canadian Sikh who sought to simplify the Sikh festival calendar by establishing fixed dates for the observances. His efforts culminated in the adopting of this calendar by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, the apex body managing Sikh Gurdwaras and religious affairs.

The structure of the Nanakshahi calendar closely aligns with the solar-based Gregorian system. It commences on March 14th, a date traditionally believed to be the birthday of Guru Nanak. The calendar consists of 12 months, each spanning 30 to 31 days, bringing the total to 365 or 366 days per year.

The months in the Nanakshahi calendar carry terms found in Puranic and medieval Indian texts. Under this system, major Sikh festivals like Guru Nanak Gurpurab and Vaisakhi receive fixed dates, eliminating the inconsistencies and annual adjustments required by the lunar calendar. Celebrations, including Maghi and Hola Mohalla, are also set, facilitating the consistent observation of these significant dates.

The introduction of the Nanakshahi calendar was more than a mere administrative change; it symbolized a distinct religious identity for Sikhism.

Each month in the Nanakshahi calendar starts in the middle of a Gregorian month and is named after the traditional Indian lunar months.

Potato Chip Day, Ntl.: March 14

National Potato Chip Day is observed annually in the US and celebrates a simple snack that generates over US$ 15 billion in revenue annually. Chef George Speck (Crum) of Native American and African American heritage and his sister Wicks Speck are often attributed as the originators of the thin potato snack, despite the several recipes in cookbooks in the 1820s and 1830s. What is indisputable is that Speck is the man who popularized the chip, or "crisp," as the English would say. Potato chips were first served at Moon's Lake House in Saratoga Springs, New York, hence the nickname "Saratoga chips." Speck's sister explained in an interview during the 1930s that the potato chip's creation was a mistake. A slice of potato fell into a pan of grease, cooked, and she pulled it out and set it aside in 1853. Her brother walked by, popped it in his mouth, and liked it. Chips were a quick and easy addition to the menu and used up the scraps from potatoes. Speck opened his first restaurant in 1860, Crum's, and the potato chip would become synonymous with him. Fastidious toward detail, Speck ensured every table in his upscale restaurant included a basket of chips as an appetizer (like tortilla chips in Mexican restaurants today). Speck died at the age of 90 in 1914. Today potato chips are one of the most popular snacks in the world.

Today is the first day of the Sikh Calendar and its New Year, referred to as the Nanakshahi calendar (named after Guru Nanak, Sikh's founder, who was born in 1469).
