Good Samaritan Day, named after the parable of the good Samaritan from the New Testament of the Bible, (Luke 10:25-37), promotes universal respect, empathy the importance of being a good and selfless person by acting rather than remaining passive in the face of need. March's Good Samaritan Day was declared in 1964 in New York City after Catherine "Kitty" Genovese was viciously stabbed and murdered before witnesses on the streets of the city. Why does a murder of a single woman deserve a day of remembrance? At the senseless crime scene, nearly 40 people witnessed it and allegedly stood by and watched as Catherine screamed for help and then died. Not one of the bystanders intervened. The second Good Samaritan Day occurs in October. The New York murder of Catherine Genovese was forgotten over the years until the same thing happened again on Foshan Market Street in Guangdong, China. A young girl named Wang Yue was run over by two vehicles on October 13, 2011. Dozens of people gathered on the sidewalk, watching the cars plow over the young girl and doing nothing to save her until an older woman named Chen Xianmei rushed to her aid. It was too late. Crushed under the weight of the vehicles, Wang Yue died. October's Good Samaritan Day was created by Richard Lutz, appalled by the indifference of the onlookers, as a tribute to Yue's life. It falls on the anniversary of her deadly attack. With today's propensity to get images that will trend on social media rather than societal engagement, Good Samaritan Day and the two women killed behind each remind us to be present in this world, assist when possible, and reject becoming a passive, dispassionately callous assemblage of malignant apathy.

K-9 (Police Dogs) Veterans Day (1942): March 13

March 13, 1942, is the official birthday of the United States K-9 Corps. Dogs have been in the military and law enforcement for centuries. Thousands have died in the line of duty, and they perform many functions, from search and recovery to defense and security. K-9 Veteran's Day was created by the late Joe White and his wife, Sally. Though Joe left this world in 2009, this event continues to grow in importance, with several states now honoring the services of K-9 soldiers and police officers in times of war and in keeping our streets and neighborhoods safe.

March Madness: March 19 - April 8

March Madness is the NCAA college basketball playoffs leading up to the championship, featuring one team from each regional championship (Final Four): East, South, Midwest, and West regions. The Final Four determines which teams will ultimately face each other for the Championship game in April in both the men's and women's basketball programs. Today is the day the first round begins, and there are two. This series of games is also known as "March Madness." The tournament was created in 1939 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches from the idea of Ohio State University coach Harold Olsen.

Pi Day is a play on the date in the United States, and 3.14 is the shortened version of the one million-digit number Pi. In the United States, people write March 14 as 3/14, thus Pi Day. The purpose of this day is to show how fun math can be. In March 2001, Dan Hellerich bought the domain name piday.org. Since then, the site has undergone four major revisions, with each version leveraged to try out new technologies. In 2008, the site started using WordPress to feature more articles about Pi in our culture. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives passed Resolution 224, naming March 14, 2009, Pi Day. Pi Day joined Facebook in 2009 and quickly got thousands of "Likes." On Pi Day 2010, Google recognized the holiday worldwide with a doodle on its homepage, helping piday.org serve nearly a million page views in a single day.
