Shabbat Shekalim (J): March 8/9

Shabbat Shekalim, or the Sabbath (Saturday) of Shekels, is a Jewish calendar event that occurs prior to Purim. On Shabbat Shekalim, adult males of the Jewish faith read Exodus 30:11-16 and contribute 1/2 of a biblical shekel (seven grams) toward maintaining the Tent of the Meeting. Shabbat Shekalim always begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday. In leap years, the Hebrew calendar has two months of Adar. In these years, Shabbat Shekalim is on the Shabbat before the 1st of Adar II. The Jewish Shabbat begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday.

The origins of International Women's Day date to the early 1900s, a time when women globally were beginning to organize and demand better working conditions, higher wages, and the right to vote. In 1908, women in New York City marched to demand better working conditions and voting rights. The following year, the first National Woman's Day was celebrated in the United States on February 28th, followed by the creation of International Women's Day in 1911, sponsored by Socialist International to honor the struggles of working women and promote women's rights and social justice. Since then, International Women's Day has been celebrated annually in countries worldwide, focusing on different themes and issues each year. These themes have included topics such as women's economic empowerment, gender-based violence, women's health, and the role of women in peace-building and conflict resolution. Barbie Doll Day (1959): March 9

On March 9, 1959, the Barbie Doll, one of the most successful toys of all time, premiered at the American International Toy Fair. The doll is named after creator Ruth Handler’s daughter Barbara. Later the doll was given a full name, Barbara Millicent Roberts, daughter of the fictional George and Margaret Roberts and living in the fictional town of Willows, Wisconsin. The Barbie doll was one of the first toys to benefit from a complete marketing campaign. Later Barbie got a boyfriend named Ken Carson in 1961 and a sister called Skipper. She became a figurehead of Feminism in the 1970s, taking on multiple careers. The Barbie Doll idea came from the 1955 German doll Bild Lilli.

Crabmeat Day: March 9

National Crabmeat Day is recognized throughout the United States by seafood restaurants and often includes specials on crab-based dishes. The event itself has no official sponsor. Until recently, crabbing was considered one of the most dangerous occupations in the world, with the Bering Sea of Alaska functioning as the flash point. Crabbing began in earnest during the early 1900s as an occupation, and it was done derby style. Picture a concert without reserved seating and a mad rush for the best spots when the doors open. Derby fishing is like this. The season is only a few days long, and hundreds of boats would challenge each other to get to the best hunting grounds and pull up as many crabs as possible. In the chaos, many lives were lost, both human and crustacean. With Alaska officially becoming a state in 1959, the state and Federal authorities took control of the natural resources, including fish and shellfish. Regulations in the 1980s due to overfishing and global warming ended the free-for-all with laws, quotas, and enforcement of coastal waters. In 2005 a formal quota system was instituted basing the number of crabs that a ship could catch based on the previous year’s catch. The quota made the industry far safer but eliminated a large portion of the jobs. Today crab fishermen can be found in several territories: Alaska, Canada, Russia, Japan, Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, and Australia. The top four crabs sought are the King, Dungeness, Tanner, and Snow Crabs.

The Fanny Pack, love it or hate it, that depends on when you were born. For this writer, a GenXer, when my parents (Boomers and Lost Generation) first donned a fanny pack in the early 1990s and wanted to be seen in public with me, my answer: “Nooooooooooo! Over my dead body!” To this day, a veteran traveler of over 55 countries, I still refuse to wear one, opting for a money belt and camera bag, but I will be seen in public with my parents sporting one. Of course, the organizer of International Fanny Pack Day has tied it to a philanthropic activity that makes it difficult to knock the fashion statement: ending hunger and supporting your local food bank. They say to wear one for the day to raise awareness, and don’t forget to support your local food bank. They don’t say it can’t be on your dog, car antenna, stroller, bike, soccer ball, purse, backpack, or something else. Creatives, get creative and show off that fanny pack in a manner that doesn’t offend your fashion sense! It is all for a good cause, after all. This event occurs annually on the second Saturday of March.

Joe Franklin Day (1926): March 9

National Journalist's Day is an opportunity to recognize journalists' significant work in Afghanistan and highlight the need for press freedom and the protection of journalists' rights. The day includes various events, including seminars, workshops, and award ceremonies, which aim to celebrate the achievements of Afghan journalists and encourage further growth in the country's media sector.

Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, over 50% of journalists have lost their jobs, and several have been killed, including 19 injured and the murders of Sajjad Mosawi and Akmal Nazari at an awards presentation on March 11, 2023, by a bomb detonated by ISIL in Mazar-e-sharif.
