It provides unprecedented public access to government documents for various purposes, including research, journalism, and law. It took 12 years for the landmark legislation to go from idea to legal statute, largely thanks to the dogged efforts of California Congressman John E. Moss. National Sunshine Week is an awareness campaign focusing on the importance of the Freedom of Information Act and its contributions to accurate journalism. It is observed throughout the nation by media organizations, schools, universities, and libraries and coupled with a public relations campaign. The event first appeared in 2005. Sunshine week marks the birthday of James Madison, the father of the US Constitution. Madison was born on March 16, 1751.

Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Meltdown (JP) (2011): March 11

Referred to as three-eleven in Japan, today is the anniversary of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Meltdown, March 11, 2011. The nuclear disaster occurred when the plant was hit by a tsunami triggered by one of the world’s most deadly earthquakes, a magnitude of 9.0. Radioactive material began releasing the next day. The cleanup continues. Some contaminated water made it to the sea, infecting fish and plant life. More than 300,000 people evacuated the area due to the tsunami and earthquake. The nuclear disaster was ruled manmade as the plant was unable to weather such a disaster. The first three of their six reactors melted down in March 2011, damaging the fourth reactor. Decommissioning could take more than 40 years. Nuclear refugees total over 71,000, most remaining in temporary housing.

The Infertility Awareness Shabbat is Yesh Tikva's program designed to raise awareness and sensitivity regarding infertility. Infertility affects one in eight men and women in the Jewish community. To raise awareness, on Shabbat morning, synagogues partner with Yesh Tikva to share a Dvar Torah, or message of hope and compassion for all couples looking to have children.

Key Deer Awareness Day (1967): March 11

Key deer are a sub-species of the North American white tale deer and native to the southernmost Florida Keys. The miniature deer average 25-35 inches (64 - 89 centimeters) high at the shoulder, making them roughly the same size as a Labrador Retriever. Key deer landed on the endangered species list on March 11, 1967, when only a few dozen remained. Today they are protected and swim from island to island, with the majority living in the national refuge. Key Deer Day is an awareness campaign that focuses on education and protecting the habitat of this fun size deer.

Labour Day (AU-VIC, TAS): March 11

Labour Day in Australia is a national holiday, but it is complicated as each province has its day to celebrate, which can occur in March, May, or October. West Australia, Tasmania, and Victoria provinces observe in March., albeit on different days. Labour Day represents the international celebration of organized labor and was conceived first in North America. A conference of American and Canadian unions in 1884 declared May 1, 1886, as a day of strike action in support of the eight-hour day. In Chicago, a crowd of 80,000 workers was attacked by police, and six workers were gunned down. In subsequent protests, another 11 workers were killed. A further seven workers were arrested, of whom four were hanged, and a fifth killed himself to cheat the noose. Two others received life sentences. In Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald reported in 1890 that in Vienna, the wealthy business owners and elites were so unnerved by worker support for May Day that they placed their valuables in banks' custody. Two years earlier, Australian workers rallied to the cause of British dockworkers during the famous Dockers Strike of 1888. Of $48,000 contributed from overseas, more than $30,000 was sent by Australian workers. In 1891 squatters in Queensland determined to break the Shearers union employed scab labor. The Shearers and the Queensland government sent police and armed troops to arrest strikers. A call to create an international day during the nineteenth century failed due to ideological splits within the trade union movement. May Day gathered in strength in Australia and is now part of the worldwide celebration recognizing labor. However, Australia's territories maintained state-supported Labour Days throughout the year.
