March 11 is the anniversary of the Madrid Train Bombings. There were three major terrorist attacks in the first five years of the twenty-first century that forever changed Western civilization, civil safety, and privacy rights: September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington DC; the July 7, 2005, London bombings; and today's anniversary, the March 11, 2004, Madrid commuter train bombings. In Spain, ten bombs exploded on four commuter trains almost simultaneously, killing 191 people and injuring more than 1,800 during the morning rush hour. It was and continues to be the deadliest terrorist attack in Spain's history.

Oatmeal Nut Waffles Day occurs in March and celebrates this popular treat dating back to the Middle Ages. Originally this recipe consisted of only flour and water. Today, people substitute oat flour and whole oats for flour and add ingredients like butter, eggs, honey, or milk. Oatmeal was food for horses and the plant itself, a weed, and it was the Scottish first cooked it and ate it as porridge. The slightly sweet taste of oatmeal quickly catapult it into a favorite. Russia, Canada, the United States, Finland, and Poland are the world’s top producers of oats. To this day, livestock consumes the majority of oats. However, the versatility of oats and their health benefits, including being high in fiber, low fat, and vitamins, have made them a breakfast favorite and an excellent alternative to wheat.

Pandemic Day, (1918/2020): March 11

Pandemic Day might go down in history as one of its eeriest coincidences. On March 11, 1918, the first cases of the Spanish Flu were reported in the United States when 107 soldiers at Fort Riley, Kansas, were diagnosed. The Spanish Flu would claim the lives of 500,000 US citizens and 22 million people worldwide. Fast forward to March 11, 2020, when the novel Coronavirus, named COVID-19, was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization. As of this writing (June 2021), the world is still amid this pandemic. Over 614,000 Americans have died, and globally, nearly 4,000,000. However, the global number is considered a vast underestimate, with experts estimating that the number is closer to 20 million. Nations, including India, Brazil, Syria, Yemen, Palestinian Territories, and others, lack the medical infrastructure, testing, and reporting mechanisms to track infections and deaths, particularly in rural communities, accurately.

Alfred Hitchcock Day (1940): March 12

31 Days of PKD Challenges: March

Thirty-one Days of PKD Challenges seeks to teach the public and keep medical professionals informed about Polycystic Kidney Disease, a genetic disease, with a different activity each day of the month. As a person ages, symptoms worsen. Fluid-filled cysts form and enlarge both kidneys, often leading to kidney failure. There are two types of PKD: Autosomal Dominant PKD (ADPKD) in adults and Autosomal Recessive PKD (ARPKD) in children. This rare disease affects one in 20,000 people worldwide and occurs if both parents carry the gene. Most people with it will develop kidney failure before reaching age 60. Currently, there is no cure, and the disease does not skip generations.

The Hebrew calendar is a lunar-solar calendar that follows the cycles of the moon and the sun. The length of a lunar month is approximately 29.5 days, meaning a lunar year of 12 months is about 11 days shorter than a solar year of 365.25 days. To keep the Jewish holidays within their appropriate seasons, the Hebrew calendar adds an extra month called Adar II, or Adar Sheni, in leap years. Adding an extra month to the Hebrew calendar dates back to biblical times when the Torah commanded the Hebrews to observe the festivals of Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot at specific times of the year, which were determined by the agricultural cycle. To ensure that these festivals always fell in their appropriate seasons, the Sanhedrin, or the faith's high court, declared leap year when necessary by adding an extra month of Adar, Adar II, following the traditional month of Adar, for clarity. The addition of Adar II ensured that Passover, falling on the 15th of the Hebrew month of Nisan, always occurs in the spring. Hebrew leap years occur seven times every 19-year cycle, in years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17, and 19, delivering 13 months in those years or "shanah me'uberet," which means a "pregnant year," versus the traditional twelve. In summary, the Leap Year Month of Adar II was added to the Hebrew calendar to ensure that the holidays would occur in their appropriate seasons and to align the lunar calendar with the solar year.
