Internment Day (1942): February 19

American history isn’t always flattering. Whether slavery, genocide against Native Americans, civil rights abuses, and even the insurrection of the capital in 2021 by people seeking to interfere with the peaceful transfer of power, few events are more contra-American and shameful than the events of February 19, 1942. President Franklin D Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 on this day, ordering the internment of Japanese Americans in concentration camps on US soil. Of the over 110,000 Japanese Americans held during WWII, two-thirds were American citizens, and their only crime was being of Japanese ancestry. In addition to losing their freedom, they lost their homes, businesses, and communities and wouldn’t be released until January 2, 1945. Internment Day marks this wretched anniversary.

National Invasive Species Week is one of two each year, focusing on outreach and education. Invasive species can be plant, animal, or insect-based. When they land in an area, they can devastate an entire ecosystem destroying food, habitats, crops, and livestock. How you can help: BOATERS—Clean, drain and dry your boat trailer and gear whenever you leave a body of water. PET OWNERS—If you have acquired an undesirable pet or fish species for your aquarium or water garden, it is important not to release these plants or animals into the environment. TRAVELERS, HIKERS, BIKERS, BIRDERS, AND CAMPERS—If you engage in terrestrial recreational activities like camping, hiking, biking, or birding, take care not to be an unwitting vehicle of dispersion. GARDENERS—Not all non-native species are bad, but some plants that look lovely in your garden might be harmful invaders that will make their way into natural areas.

Jaya Ekadashi (H): February 19

Hindus believe fasting (vrat) on Jaya Ekadashi assists in eradicating one's sins and brings them closer to achieving salvation (Moksha). While pious devotees observe a complete fast on this day, some opt for a partial fast. The day before Jaya Ekadashi, people consume a single meal to prepare for the fast. On Jaya Ekadashi, devotees rise early and take a bath, after which they offer their morning prayers to Lord Vishnu. The vrat is observed for 24 hours, either full or partial abstinence from specific foods, including rice, grains, honey, and eating on a metal plate. However, fruits, nuts, milk products, vegetables, and dried fruits can be consumed during the vrat. Firm Vishnu devotees stay awake the entire night and spend their time at Vishnu temples singing hymns and listening to stories devoted to Lord Vishnu. After bathing and offering prayers the following day, a lamp is lit, completing the vrat. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

Louis Riel Day (CA)(1870): February 19

How do you describe Louis Riel to someone from the United States? It can be challenging. Riel was a little Davy Crocket, a dollop of William Penn, a pinch of Jesse James with a smattering of Nathanael Greene, all wrapped around the heart of Fredrick Douglas. He's considered a hero to many and a scoundrel to others. In Canada, Louis Riel Day commemorates the man and the events of February 17, 1870, which led to the founding of Manitoba. Riel was born in 1844 and led two resistance movements against the Canadian government to preserve the human rights, culture, and lands of the native Métis people, ultimately through the establishment of Manitoba. Here's how it came into being. The Red River Rebellion of fall/winter 1869-1870 sought to safeguard First Nations rights as the region transferred from the Hudson Bay Company into the hands of the Canadian confederation government. Riel was elected the provisional governor of the Métis people and negotiated on their behalf. Most French and Anglo settlers agreed to work with the First Nation peoples through the negotiations. However, the Canadian Party, a small rebel faction, objected to considerations. The party took up arms against Reil, the talks, and the provisional government. It sought to remove each in a series of skirmishes and avoid a settlement with the First Nations. On February 17, 1870, the rebellion ended as forty-eight Canadian Party militants were arrested near Fort Garry. Among those detained was Thomas Scott, who Riel directed the Métis to execute by the firing squad on March 4. Scott's execution prompted the talks creating the Manitoba Act, which went into force on May 12, 1870. However, his execution caused the Protestant Canadians to band together against the provisional government and its leader, forcing Riel to seek asylum in the United States. He spent the next decade bouncing back and forth over the border. Riel served in the Canadian Parliament for four months during his bouncing days, from October 1873 to January 1874. Ultimately, like the US government's dealings with Native Americans, the Canadian government didn't uphold its bargain with the Métis and First Nation people, leading to another rebellion, the North-West Rebellion. The loss of wild bison hunted to near extinction in the US, and Canadian territories contributed to the urgency. Reil led this uprising against the Canadian confederacy, was captured in the Battle of Batoche, and later executed on November 16, 1885, at age 41 for treason. In 2008 the Canadian government made Louis Riel Day an official holiday. Currently, it falls the same day as Family Day, a national holiday in Canada, except in British Columbia, which celebrates Family Day a week earlier, so Riel gets his day, and BCers get two Mondays off.

President's Day: February 19

For those of us old enough to remember, we used to get two days off school in February: Lincoln's Birthday and Washington's birthday. Two other presidents were also born in February, Ronald Reagan, and William Henry Harrison. President's Day was declared a federal holiday by Congress in 1880. In 1971, President Richard Nixon combined Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays into Presidents' Day, but schools continued to recognize the two separate days until the early 1980s. Today we have just one federal holiday, the Monday closest to George Washington's Birthday on February 22. Washington was born under the Julian Calendar, which put the date 11 days earlier on February 11. In 1752 the nation switched to the Georgian Calendar, and his birthday became February 22, the day he celebrated for the rest of his life. The United States has the fewest recognized paid federal holidays worldwide, with just six, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, nationally recognized by all employers, public sector and private. Juneteenth, President's Day, and Martin Luther King Day are still not recognized by all employers as paid holidays.

Each day of the week has a different focus. The key objectives of this week include the following:
