Handcuff Day, Ntl. (1912): February 20

06:20 AM | -
On February 20, 1912, the US Patent Office issued patent #1,017,955 to George A. Carney for a "swinging bow ratchet type" adjustable handcuff. Today is the anniversary of that invention. Quite a few criminals probably would like to forget about it, though fetish aficionados love to recall it.

Hoodie Hoo Day, Northern: February 20

06:20 AM | -
Created by Wellcat, today's object is to mark the day exactly one month until spring begins in the northern hemisphere. In anticipation, people are encouraged to walk outside at noon and yell "Hoodie Hoo" at the top of their lungs.

Learning Disabilities Conference Week, Intl. (US-NV): February 20 - 22 (est)

06:20 AM | -
For 60 years, educators, families, parents, and community leaders have met for a week to discuss issues, programming, and tactics designed to create successful opportunities for individuals affected by learning disabilities. This conference aims to reduce the incidence of learning disabilities in future generations. Based upon the idea that everyone can succeed at school, work, relationships, and community if given the right opportunities and supports they need. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are only a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Love Your Pet Day: February 20

06:20 AM | -
Love Your Pet Day doesn't appear to have an official sponsor, but several local humane society groups have adopted it as a day to focus on your pet's well-being. 1. Are your pet's shots up to date? 2. Have you purchased flea and tick drops for the upcoming flea season? 3. Is your pet getting enough exercise? 4. If it wanders, is it tagged and chipped? Take the day to consider things you can do to help your pet live a long and happy life, and check with your local Humane Society to see if they have any programs or special events on this day.

Card Reading Day: February 21

06:20 AM | -
Greeting cards first appeared in China and Egypt over 2,000 years ago to send greetings during celebrations like the Chinese New Year. By the 15th century, Europeans began exchanging cards made of paper, wood, and other materials. The oldest existing greeting card is a Valentine sent during the 1400s. Fast forward to 1843, three years after the introduction of the first postage stamp. Sir Henry Cole saw an opportunity in Victorian England and created the first commercially available Christmas Cards. The same year Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol. Christmas Cards and greeting cards were sold on a mass scale beginning in the early 20th century. They were still costly for the average person until 1910 when Joyce C Hall started his first card business with a shoe box full of cards. By 1912 his brothers joined him, and the business grew. By the 1920s, most people could afford cards, and in 1928 the company began marketing cards under the Hallmark Name. And the rest is history. National Card Reading Day is an unofficial holiday with no sponsor.

Grain Free Day, Ntl: February 21

06:20 AM | -
Gluten-free has become a buzzword and a highly sought-after characteristic in food. Grain Free Day began in 2019 as a promotional venue for Siete Family Foods, a grain-free traditional Mexican and American foods manufacturer. Gluten is an organic protein found in plants called prolamin. People with celiac disease and those with a wheat allergy—less than 1% of the global population—experience inflammation and other side effects from gluten. For this extreme minority of people, their diets must be gluten-free. Today is a day to learn about that and empathize by going a day without grain. However, like many current and former food fads, the majority of people who insist on gluten-free do not need it. Their reasons are self-serving, including: Vanity reasons (e.g., demanding gluten-free without a disease gets a person a lot of attention via disruption at any event with food and sympathy). Psychological reasons (e.g., they think it's healthier because some influencer says so; it is something they can control (and be pitied for), or they have imagined symptoms medical tests cannot confirm). Regrettably, the gluten-free bandwagon boy-who-cried-wolf embracing of the fad diminishes the reality and urgency for the small percentage of people with an actual health need for a gluten-free diet—people with celiac or a diagnosed allergy. It trivializes their condition by making it a fad. For them, it is not a fad. It is life and death. For the record, gluten has zero negative impact on non-celiac and non-wheat allergic people. In fact, as a protein, it is highly favorable for vegetarian and vegan diets.

Martyrs Day (BD)(1952): February 21

06:20 AM | -
Like many societies, the Bengalese seek to preserve their language and heritage. Student protesters were killed on this day in 1952 when Urdu was declared the official language of neighboring Pakistan. Ultimately Bengalese won the right to speak and have their language (spoken by over 250 million people) as the official state language. February 21 honors those who died to preserve the language, and the United Nations International marks it as Mother Language Day in honor of the student's sacrifice.

Sticky Bun Day, Ntl.: February 21

06:20 AM | -
Delicious, sweet, buttery, and nutty, sticky buns have been a favorite breakfast sweet (or mid-afternoon sugar rush) for centuries. Sticky buns originated in North Africa and Greece and worked their way through Europe as the Romans expanded their empire. These sweet breads didn’t hit major popularity until around 1688 when the Germans and Dutch, fleeing war in their regions, immigrated to the United States, many settling in Philadelphia. Today if you get a chance to visit the Reading (Pronounced Red-ing) Terminal in downtown Philadelphia, you’ll find an Amish Bakery and several others that continue to make the sticky buns the way they’ve been made for centuries. Enjoy!

Be Humble Day is all about humility and putting others first. There does not appear to be an originator of this event; it simply came to be through internet repetition. Wherever it originated, no one can argue that humility remains a beautiful quality in people. So give it a try. Spend the day practicing humility and focusing on making those you engage today feel fabulous.

For the Love of Mike Day: February 22

06:20 AM | -
We have yet to learn why Wellcat created this holiday. But we can at least explore the phrase 'For the Love of Mike.' In the 1880s, rather than profaning God's name in moments of incredulity or exasperation, people would say either "For Pete's Sake!" or "For the Love of Mike!". It was one way to avoid blemishing the 4th Commandment, "Thou shall not take thy Lord's name in vain." There is a lost film, originally called 'Hell's Kitchen' and later retitled 'For the Love of Mike' from 1927. The film was directed by Frank Capra (It's a Wonderful Life) and featured Claudette Colbert in her debut, with Ben Lyon playing Mike. There is no copy known copy of the film left. It is a romantic drama involving gambling and trying to throw a rowing competition, plus a Three Men and a Baby scenario as three single men raise Mike.
