Single-tasking Day: February 23

Forget multitasking. Go for single-tasking. National Single-tasking Day will be much easier for right-handed men. Why? Women and left-handed men have larger corpus callosum than right-handed men. It means women and left-handed men can both think and feel simultaneously, something essential for multitasking and analyzing multiple sources of information, including emotional IQ. It's also evolutionary. Women multitask because if the children were to survive in caveman days up to the present, they needed to be able to watch them and do other things. Got a problem that needs someone to juggle a bunch of different things? Put a woman or a left-handed man on it. They can watch tv, read a book, watch the children, and cook simultaneously. However, a right-handed man is your best choice if you need absolute focus, no deviations, and no distractions. He is purpose-driven and will only stop once he completes his work. He is a single-tasker. It is why many men can't deal with someone talking over the game on TV. They'll talk or watch the game, but don't make them do both. You'll drive them crazy. Evolutionarily, this worked. He needed to protect and bring home food. It is also why men can go for 30-45 days after a break-up and not appear phased. They usually get thumped by emotions in weeks six and eight. Until then, they can think it away by focusing on something else. If you've broken up with a right-handed man, give him 60 days to reconnect. If he loves you, he will reconnect by then. If he doesn't, he'll move on to another task. Skip the Straw Day: February 23

Most of the world was horrified by the picture of the turtle with a plastic straw jammed up its nose. Single-use straws continue to add to the abundance of plastic waste worldwide. The students of Whitehall Middle School decided they could do something about this and created Skip the Straw Day to encourage people to drink without straws and save the planet. The event caught the attention of others and is now observed by millions of people worldwide.

Tennis Day, Ntl. Play (1874): February 23

On February 23, 1874, Walter Wingfield (October 16, 1833 – April 18, 1912) of England patented a “New and Improved Court for Playing the Ancient Game of Tennis.” These are the same balls, rackets, nets, and posts currently used in tennis today. He called it lawn tennis and packaged the various elements with an instruction book. Before this, tennis had been an indoor sport that the gentry could only enjoy during Christmastide. An example of the original game can be seen in the Showtime Series “The Tudors,” Season one, Episode 1. Wingfield took the game outdoors and made it something that anyone could play on any large grassy area. Today celebrates that patent and the game.

Bartender Day, World: February 24

Bartending originated in Rome, Greece, and Asia. It is a profession that, in its infancy, required the barkeeper to be skilled at brewing spirits, ales, and wines. Beginning in the 20th century, cocktails became popular, and the bartender, rather than a keeper, was born. Prohibition increased the popularity of these mixed drinks. By the time the United States emerged from the stranglehold of the Volstead Act, bartending had been elevated to a highly skilled service profession. World Bartender Day recognizes the achievements and craft of bartenders worldwide. This event first ran in 2018.

Flag Day (MX)(1984): February 24

Green represents independence, white honors the purity of the Roman Catholic faith, and red represents the blood of national heroes and Spanish ancestry; the Mexican flag includes an emblem of an eagle on a cactus with a snake honoring the Aztec people indigenous to the area. It became the official flag of Mexico, celebrating its heritage and people in 1821. Today's flag is similar, with the colors slightly brighter and the insignia more complex. The current flag was adopted for use officially on February 24, 1984. Flag Day (El Did de la Bandera) is a national holiday in Mexico.

Gregorian Calendar Day (1582): February 24

On February 24, 1582, Pope Gregory XIII established the Gregorian calendar via a Pappel Bull, the primary calendar used today and underlying international commerce. The new calendar went into effect on October 4, 1582. In 1752 it became the official calendar throughout most of Europe and the empire colonies. Russia, a holdout, started using it in the 20th century. The Julian calendar, which the world was using, was created by Julius Cesar. It had a problem, though. It wasn't accurate. Every year it was off by 11.5 minutes. Over centuries, 11 minutes per year adds up. When Pope Gregory established the new calendar, Cesar’s was ten days off. The Julian calendar added an extra day every four years to account for the extra quarter day it takes the sun to rotate around the earth. We call this a "leap year." This idea may have come from the Hebrew calendar, which adds a thirteenth month, Adar II, to account for the difference between the moon and sun rotations in its leap years. The Gregorian calendar addressed the missing 11.5 minutes and split time into two eras: before the birth of Jesus Christ (BC) and after the nativity, or anno Domini (AD), "the [first] year of our Lord" in Latin. Of course, non-Christian religions and secularists didn't like this, so they changed it to "Before the Common Era" (BCE) and "Common Era" (CE). No matter what you call it, the demarcation point is still the same: the birth of Jesus Christ. Orthodox Christians still use the Julian calendar (off by 11 days when the Gregorian calendar was adopted globally in 1752) as their religious calendar, which is why you'll find two different celebrations of Easter and Christmas each year. Other religions use their calendars, most of which follow the movements of the sun, moon, and-or stars. These calendars are shorter than the Gregorian, now the international standard. The oldest calendar in the world is the Byzantine calendar, which began marking time over 7,500 years ago.

Today marks the birthday of Hindu Guru Ravidas, who was born on this month's full moon in 1377 AD or 1450 AD, depending upon the source (historians disagree). Each year on this day, the faithful form an Aarti and a Nagar Kirtan procession with the guru's portrait displayed. It is a festival atmosphere of music and dance as the crowd makes its way to the local temple. When a river is near, devotees immerse in the water to perform rites. Guru Raviass was one of the first civil rights activists. He taught that one is distinguished not by one's caste (jāti) but by one's actions (karma) and that everyone has the right to worship God and read holy texts. Like many eastern European and Baltic states, Estonia has endured a less than direct path to independence. On February 24, 1918, it achieved its independence from the Russian empire, only to be annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. Fifty-one years later, this little nation, populated since 8500 BC, finally achieved independence again. Today is their national day celebrating the anniversary of their first freedom.

Magha Puja, Māgha Pūjā, Makha Bucha, or the full moon of Tabodwe, is a Buddhist holy day celebrated at the full moon during the month of Māgha in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. It marks the anniversary of the gathering of 1250 disciples with the Buddha, who did not have an invitation in 531 BC. Magha Puja is a public holiday where observant Buddhists refrain from sinning and spend the day purifying their minds and souls.
