The fine print is no print, and your carefree days of living without glasses are suddenly gone. Most everyone experiences this. But some get much worse. AMD (Age-related macular degeneration) is a leading cause of vision loss. It affects more than 2 million Americans aged 50 and older. AMD Low Vision Month is set aside each year in February to bring awareness to the effects and dangers associated with vision loss as we age. Programs focus on promoting aids for low vision that enable people to make the most of their remaining vision. Optometrists and others supply information on eye diseases, warning signs, and treatment.

Baked Alaska Day, Ntl.: February 1

Baked Alaska Day celebrates a dessert made of cake, ice cream, and baked meringue. Its origin is disputed as either France, the United States, or China. What is known is that the name was coined in 1876 by Chef Charles Ranhofer of Delmonico's restaurant in New York City to honor the acquisition of the Alaska Territory from Russia by the United States on October 18, 1867, and its official designation as a US District on May 17, 1884. Baked Alaska is simple to make. A cake is topped with ice cream and enshrouded with a meringue cap which is baked for a minute or so to brown and harden the meringue. The ice cream, insulated by the meringue, doesn't melt. Often fruits, honey, liquor, or nuts are added. Deliciously rich, Baked Alaska Day celebrates the dessert and the state.

Going into heat is when a female animal becomes fertile and can conceive a litter. Each year tens of thousands of kittens and puppies are born, exploding the population of unwanted pets and overwhelming shelters. Unfortunately, most of these animals never find forever homes and have to be put down. Beat the Heat Month reminds pet parents to get their pets spayed or neutered before their animals go into heat. It's a small thing you can do that makes a big difference. Look for discounted spaying and neutering services during this month within your community. This campaign encourages people to provide food, water, and shelter to help wild birds survive. Currently, one-third of the U.S. adult population feeds wild birds in their backyards. Car Insurance Day (1897): February 1

Traveler's Insurance issued the first auto insurance policy in 1897 to Gilbert J. Loomis, who built a one-cylinder car. Why does this day fall on February 1, and most online sources list the year as 1898? A phone call clears up the lack of fact-checking in the internet echo chamber. February 1 is when the second policy went into effect. Who was first? According to the historian at Traveler's Insurance, the company believed that the policy issued to Dr. Truman Martin of Buffalo, New York, on February 1, 1898, was its first auto policy for over sixty years. Then one day in 1956, eighty-plus-year-old Gilbert J. Loomis notified Traveler's the date of the first policy needed to be revised. Rather than New York and Mr. Martin, Ohio granted the first auto coverage to him. His policy with Travelers, dated 1897, which he brought to the headquarters, made Loomis the first to have auto insurance. The actual date is likely in October or November, not February, as once believed. Unfortunately, the date Travelers enacted his policy in 1897 is still being determined, and nobody made a copy of the historical document when the record was amended in 1956. When did mandatory car insurance begin? That started across the pond. The United Kingdom is responsible for compulsory car insurance for licensed drivers and owners of vehicles. The British Parliament passed the Road Traffic Act in 1930 after a heated debate in the House of Lords held in January of that year. Now you know where that annoying monthly bill comes from and the misclassification of its origin. The moral of the story? Always double-check what the insurance company tells you!
