Kahlúa (translation “House of the Acolhua people”) is a coffee-flavored rum-based liqueur first produced in Mexico by Pedro Domecq in 1936. The liqueur is often drunk alone, in coffee, or as a topping for desserts like ice cream, cheesecake, and flan. The most popular cocktails for Kahlúa are the B-52, Baby Guinness, Black Russian, Mudslide, White Russian, Espresso Martini, Caribbean Mudslide, and Kodiak. Though we cannot confirm it, we suspect today is National Kahlúa Day to mark the anniversary of its creation in 1936.

An NGO is an organization that is citizen-based, independent from government influence, and a non-profit. Doctors without Borders is one well-known example. An NGO can be large or a small grassroots initiative operating at a community level. World NGO Day celebrates, commemorates, and collaborates with the contributions of NGOs and the people who serve them. It first ran in 2010.

No Brainer Day: February 27

National No Brainer Day is an unofficial event in the United States, and in LEEP's opinion, it should be a salute to technical writers and their profession. The best way to celebrate it is to look at how you communicate with others when teaching a concept. Can the instructions be simplified? Can you make it a "no-brainer?" It is far more challenging to write simply than detailed. Any professional advertising copywriter will tell you that. Hats off to the professional technical writers who make instructions a no-brainer for us all. December 1959 was the first time the common saying "no-brainer" was used in a cartoon published in the Long Beach Independent to describe the effort it took to learn the game of Gin. Today it has come to mean something is very easy, and you don't need a brain to figure it out. On the opposite end, it can also mean foolishness. A personal note from Laura: Crafting instructions (technical writing) into a no-brainer is more challenging than it sounds. Not to say that a third grader doesn't have a brain. In technical writing, that's the benchmark of education attainment professionals strive to hit to make instructions understandable to the largest segment of the population. Technical writing, which I took at university, is the only writing course I have ever received a poor grade. Technical writing is supposed to be simplistic, and no matter how hard I tried, I could not write below a sixth-grade level! That's what No Brainer Day should be about, a salute to Technical Writing Professionals, and since there is no other purpose to it, that is how we're categorizing it.

Polar Bear Day, Intl.: February 27

International Polar Bear Day raises awareness of the plight of the polar bear. Activities of acknowledgment include: Turning down the heat at schools and offices to "live like a polar bear" for a day. Teaching a segment on polar bears. Visiting the polar bear exhibit at your local zoo. Climate change and industrial enterprises in the arctic circle have had a devastating effect on the natural habitat of the polar bear. The sea ice is disappearing, and many polar bears become stranded or starve. International Polar Bear Day is an effort to affect change, save the polar bear, and bring awareness to human activities impact on the environment. As of 2023, less than 26,000 polar bears remain on earth.

In the Hindu faith, Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha. Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) is observed on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (the dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan (the sight of the moon). Prayers to Lord Ganesha precede the breaking of the fast. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Spay Day, World: February 27

World Spaying Day falls on the last Tuesday in February. This event highlights spay and neuter programs implemented by animal shelters and rescue organizations to increase community awareness and support. Initially called Spay Day USA by its creator, Doris Day Animal League, World Spay Day is now recognized by over 70 countries. The event highlights affordable neutering techniques to save animal lives. During this day, people are encouraged to use the hashtag #worldspayday on social media and hold spays or neuter events in their locality. Local veterinarians also offer discounted spaying and neutering at their clinics or provide seminars on the importance of neutering and spaying. World Spaying Day is now part of the Human Society International and Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association. Often, governments employ cruel means such as shooting and putting animals down to solve the increasing number of homeless animals in the community. Neutering or spaying reduces the number of litters feral animals produce.

Floral Design Day (1914): February 28

The original idea behind Floral Design Day marked Carl Rittner's birthday. Mr. "R," as his students affectionately called him, founded The Rittners School of Floral Design in Boston over sixty years ago and was a pioneer in floral art education. Through the years, his humor, patience, and wealth of floral industry knowledge have markedly impacted thousands of students from all over the globe. It was significant when Governor Weld of Massachusetts proclaimed Floral Design Day as part of Mr. Rittner's special birthday celebration. The holiday celebrates floral design as an art form. Floral design spans thousands of years in diversity and style, reflecting various social, religious, and cultural trends. It plays a vital role in social interactions, decorating, and in establishing and maintaining relationships. The floral industry is a multi-billion-dollar industry that brightens, which peaks during Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Mother's Day.

Pink Shirt Day to End Bullying (CA): February 28

Bullying is a significant problem in Canadian schools, workplaces, homes, and over the Internet. The event takes place on the last Wednesday of February. The idea of wearing pink shirts to end bullying started with two teenagers in Nova Scotia, David Shepherd, and Travis Price. The two 17-year old's witnessed a 14-year-old student beaten for wearing a pink shirt. The boys were incensed and went to the local discount store and purchased 50 pink tank tops, which they then passed out to their fellow students. Pink Shirt Day started a movement that gained momentum. Throughout Canada, wearing pink shirts in solidarity with bullying victims raises awareness of the issue.

Public Sleeping Day: February 28

Public Sleeping Day could be cast as a silly holiday that makes fun of people who fall asleep in public. Or, this day can be used to focus attention on a very serious problem: homelessness or the newspeak of "unhoused." It's the same thing, regardless of what you call it. Since there is no sponsor or event originator, it is really up to you how you want to mark it. A personal note from Laura: I lived in Los Angeles until July 2014, when one in 14 people was homeless. The city has the largest homeless population in the United States, partly because it is warm and partly because of the high cost of housing. Like a lot of people, I got hit hard by the Great Recession and lost everything. I broke up with my fiancé, left my job for an opportunity overseas, and then had to return when the market crashed. It was so bad that three times between November 2008 and April 2010, I found myself within three days of being homeless. It terrified me, and I was even looking at ways to convert the backseat of my car into a bed. For me, a new freelance job came in just in time, and I avoided it, but thousands of others didn't. I wasn't alarmist. Except for one person I knew well, everyone lost their job between 2008 and 2010. Several friends lost their homes and businesses, and we did everything right. We went to college, got degrees, and built companies, families, and careers—yet we still lost everything. Last week I walked down to my local Vons and saw a young woman about 32 sleeping in her Mustang convertible in the parking lot. The grocery store parking lots are a favorite place for those with cars and no homes to park in Los Angeles. That was last week, in February 2014. Rather than making this a silly holiday, I suggest that people take the chance to use this day to look around. You'll see them, the homeless, who must sleep during the day because it's too dangerous at night. They're under overpasses, trees in the park, behind dumpsters, and on the beach. They're everywhere, and it is one of the saddest commentaries in our society. We're the richest country in the world, yet millions of our citizens live on the streets. Let's make Public Sleeping Day count by seeking ways to end homelessness in the United States.

In 1986 the government of India designated February 28 as National Science Day to celebrate Sir CV Raman’s 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for the Raman Effect. The Raman Effect announced on February 28, 1928, describes how photons scatter based on the type of material used in dispersing them.
