St Martin of Tours was buried on November 11, 397 AD. He is the patron saint of the impoverished, alcoholics, and beggars. November 11 is his feast day.

WHY SO MANY FEAST DAYS?

Have you ever noticed that there seem to be feast days for just about everything in the Catholic and Orthodox Christian faiths? There is a reason for that.

The church granted feast days to allow all subjects of the Crown to take a day off. As most worked six days a week, feast days provided a break that landowners and nobility couldn't deny. If they tried, they were going against the church, and that you did not do.

In medieval times, there were approximately 60 feast days a year. Add this to 52 Sundays, Christmas, and Easter; workers received at least 114 days off a year. Contrast that to today. The average American gets 104 weekend days and seven national holidays off work. That's three days less than the commoners of the Dark Ages, just in case you're feeling a little overworked.

Origami Day, Ntl. (JP): November 11

Origami is the art of paper folding that is associated with Japan. Paper was invented in China in 105 AD; one can assume art using folding paper was created shortly after that. In the 6th century AD, paper arrived in Japan and Korea. It was expensive for the average person, so origami was used for special occasions and religious services.

The name "origami" literally translates to "fold paper." The Nippon Origami Association of Tokyo created National Origami Day. It is observed in Japan each year and forms the endpoint of World Origami Days, which run between October 24 and November 11.

Remembrance Day (CA/UK/AU)(1918): November 11

Remembrance Day in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other British Commonwealth nations commemorate those people who died in the line of duty during wars. Inaugurated by King George in 1919, after WWI, that war ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Remembrance Day, also called Poppy Day, a symbol from the poem "In Flanders Fields." Lt. Col. John McCrae wrote this poem. After the poem reading, Moina Michael, a professor at the University of Georgia, also wrote "We Shall Remember" and promised to wear a poppy on the anniversary, noting that poppies bloomed on the battlefield and the red poppies symbolize the blood spilled.

Today is a day for church memorials and includes playing the song "The Last Post," with two minutes of silence observed at 11:00 AM.

Singles Day is about romance, but it is even more about insane retail sales. It's the 21st century's global version of Black Friday. If you're an online retailer who isn't tapping into Singles Day, you're missing the biggest online shopping day in the world, which generated $84.54 billion in revenues in 2021. Holy cow!

The holiday began with a group of bachelors at Nanjing University in 1993. Originally it was a reason to party and hold events where one could meet their escape from singlehood, that elusive significant other. Chinese retailer Alibaba picked up on this and began running deep discounts on 11-11 in 2009. The promotion they launched was the Global Shopping Festival.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ELEVEN

Then 2011 came around. The Chinese culture includes a lot of mysticism around numbers, and the number one is especially sacred for single adults, signifying individualism, self-sufficiency, and, most importantly, availability. With 11-11-11, savvy retailers seized the opportunity to promote the single luckiest day for singles in a century.

The more double ones, the more likely soulmates will find each other.

Singles Day is celebrated in several countries, including the United Kingdom, the European Union, China, and online globally.
