Anti-bullying week is a United Kingdom school-based awareness campaign designed to assist schools in their approach to bullying, including:

1) Ensuring pupils know what to do if bullied
2) How to will deal with bullies
3) That everyone should take bullying seriously
4) The long-term impact bullying has on friendships, self-esteem, health, and well-being.

Schools are encouraged to hold Anti-bullying assemblies. Family Lives, the sponsoring entity, provides PowerPoint presentations, videos, and flashcards to help get the discussion started. See their website to download resources. http://www.bullying.co.uk

Education Week, American: November 17-23

American Education Week is the joint initiative of the US Department of State and the US Department of Education.

It is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and student exchange worldwide. It focuses on programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract students from abroad to study, learn, and grow through exchange experiences.

Individuals and institutions, including schools, colleges and universities, embassies, international organizations, businesses, associations, and community organizations interested in international education and exchange activities, participate in this event.

A personal note from Laura:

From 1982-1983, I was a Rotary International Exchange student and spent my junior year of high school in Brazil. To this day, it remains one of the most influential periods of my life. Not only did I get to live in another culture, but it also opened my eyes to the rest of the world.

LEEP Calendar is a testament to my love of cultural diversity and would not have been possible without that exchange student experience. Since, I've worked for a multinational company in the Middle East, spent extensive time in the United Kingdom, spoken three and a quarter languages (my Arabic is amusing), and traveled to more than 56 countries. My love of the ex-pat experience and the need to be surrounded by a multitude of cultures creatively and intellectually is a direct result of taking part in a foreign exchange program. It has allowed me to be more aware of issues in the US and more critical of perceived wisdom. There is more than one way to solve a problem, and each culture has its unique positives and negatives.

If you have the opportunity to study or work in another country, do it. If you can't, host someone who is. The gift to yourself and the nation is priceless!

The Ivors Composer Week (UK): November 11-15 (est)

Composer Week is a five-day lead-up and celebration of the British music industry leading up to and through the Ivor Classical Awards. Artists, celebrities, and music industry craftsmen gather for a week of celebration, networking, workshops, and concerts to celebrate the industry and support each other leading up to the awards ceremony on Tuesday night.

Winners of The Ivors Classical Awards receive the prestigious Ivor Novello Award, widely recognized as the pinnacle of achievement since its inception in 1956. Musical works and awards fall into eight award categories, celebrating chamber, choral and orchestral compositions, staged works, community and participation projects, and sound art.

Bundt Day, Ntl.: November 15

National Bundt Day honors the Bundt cake and the Bundt pan, a baking pan with a distinctive ring shape. Inspired by the Gugelhupf cake, a traditional European sweet, it is the inspiration behind the Bundt pan. Often made from cast aluminum, the Bundt pan reached its pinnacle in modern popularity during the 50s and 60s.

From Nordic Ware, the origin of the Bundt pan: "In the 1950s, two German women approached Dave Dalquist with a cast-iron "bund" pan with a hole in the middle and asked if he could create several pans like it in aluminum for them to sell and raise money for their synagogue. Taking cue from the original pan, Dave modified the shape and created new beautiful lightweight version, which now is known as the Bundt pan. Today, the Bundt pan can be found in more than 70 million households around the world."

Cord Blood Day, World: November 15

Since 1988, stem cells from umbilical cord blood have been used in research to treat several diseases. Over the past few decades, an increasing percentage of parents have been donating their children's cord blood or enrolling in family banking in hopes that stem cells from birth may be able to treat disease or save lives in the future. Nearly 80 life-threatening diseases — from cancers to blood diseases to immune disorders — can be treated today using cord blood stem cells, including pediatric transplants, cerebral palsy, and Type One Diabetes. National Cord Blood Awareness Day seeks to educate parents and consumers about the necessity to bank cord blood for themselves and their family's future.

Drummers Day, Ntl: November 15

Mike Donovan, president of Drum Bum, Inc (Drumming.com), created National Drumming (or Drummers Day) to celebrate one of the oldest means of communication and music, the drum and drummers. The idea for a day for drummers came about during the creation of the website, which first appeared in 1999.

Drums remain crucial in music and date back to at least 6000 BC. Famous drummers include Phil Collins (Genisis), Ringo Starr (The Beatles), John Bonham (Led Zepplin), Roger Taylor (Queen), Cindy Blackman (Lenni Kravetz/Santana), and the legendary Buddy Rich. Celebrate today by celebrating the best.

Guru Nanak Jayanti (S): November 15

Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrates Guru Nanak Dev Ji (April 15, 1469-September 22, 1539), the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. It is one of the holiest days in Sikhism and may be celebrated in November or April, on his birth. Ji was born in the village of Talwandi (Nankana Sahib) in present-day Pakistan. His teachings formed the basis of Sikhism, a monotheistic religion emphasizing the importance of a truthful and purposeful life. Guru Nanak Dev Ji believed in one supreme God, who he referred to as "Waheguru." His teachings centered on equality, social justice, and service to others. He rejected the caste system and believed all human beings are equal, irrespective of their social or religious backgrounds. Guru Nanak Dev Ji's teachings form the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism. Some fundamental teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji include: Oneness of God—Guru Nanak Dev Ji preached that only one supreme creator exists who is formless, eternal, and all-pervading. He taught his followers to devote themselves to this one God and always remember Him. Equality—Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasized the importance of treating everyone equally, regardless of caste, gender, or religion. He sought to eliminate discrimination and promote unity among all people. The importance of honest living—Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught that one should earn their living through honest means and should not exploit others. He stressed the importance of hard work, humility, and compassion. Service to others (Seva)—He encouraged his followers to serve others selflessly, as this was a way to attain spiritual growth and come closer to God. Meditation and remembrance of God (Naam Japna)—Guru Nanak Dev Ji promoted meditating on the name of God and constantly remembering Him to stay spiritually connected and attain inner peace. Guru Nanak Dev Ji traveled extensively throughout his life, spreading his message and engaging in dialogues with people from various religious and cultural backgrounds. These journeys, called Udasis, took him to different parts of the Indian subcontinent and even beyond, including present-day Sri Lanka, Tibet, and the Middle East. His teachings inspire and guide millions worldwide, providing a spiritual foundation for the Sikh community.

Loi Krathong (B): November 15-16

Loi Krathong Day is a holiday that honors Buddha and focuses on releasing negative thoughts and feelings. It is also a day of thanksgiving to the water goddess Phra Mae. People of Thailand, Laos and other Buddhist majority countries place a Krathong, a decorated boat made of bread or styrofoam, into a river, pond, or lake. This action symbolizes the release of negativity. The boat's decor includes banana leaves, incense sticks, and a candle. It's a beautiful spectacle, especially for those unfamiliar with the custom.

Makepung Lampit Races (ID): November 15 (est)

The Makepung Lampit is a traditional buffalo racing event held annually in Jembrana, western Bali, Indonesia. Unlike its counterpart, Makepung, dry land-based races that occur throughout Bali from June through October, the Makepung Lampit (Chase the Plow) races occur in muddy rice fields, adding an element of challenge and excitement to the event. Teams of buffaloes, guided by jockeys, race through the slushy terrain, pulling a wooden plow behind them. The event not only showcases the physical strength and stamina of the buffaloes but also the skills and talent of the jockeys. Makepung Lampit is deeply rooted in Balinese culture and agriculture, symbolizing the joy and enthusiasm towards the plowing season.
