Created in 2007, Bulldogs are Beautiful Day is one of a handful of events created by book authors after the release of their books. This particular event derives from the book "Stinky the Bulldog" by Jackie Valent. Bulldogs are one of the more recognizable breeds and are often typecast as guard dogs, which is amusing when you realize they are also one of the friendliest breeds. Their original purpose was as work dogs helping ranchers control livestock, and they're believed to have originated in England as far back as the 400s AD. Weighing up to 120 pounds with a low center of gravity, they were especially adept at controlling bulls, ergo, bulldogs.

Chocolate Covered Cashews Day: April 21

Covering fruits, nuts, and even nougat with chocolate wasn’t possible until the 19th century. The technology needed to separate chocolate from cocoa butter wouldn’t be invented until 1828 by Conrad Van Houten in today’s Netherlands. Without this process, chocolate could only be used as a spice, much the same way you would use cinnamon or ginger. Fortunately, the process was developed, and other techniques, including conching, invented by Rudolph Lindt in 1879, would eventually lead to that box of chocolates everyone loves to get. Chocolate Covered Cashews Day is an unofficial holiday with no sponsor.

JOAQUIM JOSÉ DA SILVA XAVIER: THE LEGACY OF TIRADENTES On April 21, Brazilians celebrate Tiradentes Day, honoring Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, a key figure in the country's fight for independence from Portugal. A man of many roles—dentist, military officer, and revolutionary—he became the face of the Inconfidência Mineira, an 18th-century movement seeking to free Brazil from colonial rule. His execution in 1792 made him a martyr, and over time, his legacy grew into a national symbol of resistance and freedom. Born in 1746 in the captaincy of Minas Gerais, Xavier worked as a dentist, earning the nickname "Tiradentes"—Portuguese for "tooth puller." However, his ambitions extended far beyond dentistry. He was deeply troubled by Portugal's exploitation of Brazil's wealth, particularly its heavy taxation on gold production in Minas Gerais. Inspired by Enlightenment ideals and the recent American Revolution, he joined a group of conspirators plotting to establish an independent Brazilian republic. The Inconfidência Mineira planned to overthrow colonial rule, but the Portuguese authorities uncovered their scheme before they could act. Tiradentes, seen as one of the movement's most vocal leaders, was arrested and sentenced to death. On April 21, 1792, he was publicly hanged in Rio de Janeiro, his body dismembered and displayed to warn others against rebellion. Despite his brutal execution, Tiradentes' sacrifice did not fade into history. As Brazil moved toward independence decades later, his story resurfaced as a symbol of patriotism and defiance against oppression. In 1890, after the fall of the Brazilian monarchy, April 21 was officially declared a national holiday to honor his contribution to Brazil's fight for sovereignty. Today, Tiradentes is remembered as a national hero; his image is often depicted with long hair and a beard, resembling a revolutionary martyr. His life and death remain a powerful reminder of the price of freedom and the enduring spirit of those who dare to challenge tyranny.

Antigua Sailing Week started in 1968 when friends and hoteliers got together to hold a regatta (sailboat or yacht race). Antigua Hotel Association sponsored the first Antigua Sailing Week, which occurred June 8-15, 1968. Festivities included a three-day ‘Lord Nelson Regatta’ with sailing yachts of up to 135 feet in length, power boat races, deep sea fishing, and Sunfish sailing contests. There was also a two-day race among Antigua’s workboat fishermen. The inaugural Antigua Sailing Week was a huge success and repeated the following year, with dates moved up to May 31 through June 7, 1969. And so it went each subsequent year, with new sponsors coming on board and the program of events growing and evolving.
