It commemorates the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War in 1775. It was initially celebrated on April 19, and today it is observed on the third Monday in April.

Pineapple Upside-down Cake Day: April 20

Pineapple Upside-down Cake Day celebrates the centuries-old sweet treat. The recipe for the flipped cake came about due to an invention in 1911 by the Dole Fruit Company of Hawaii. For centuries, cast iron skillets were a kitchen staple. Rather than stoves and ovens, most people had open fires on which they cooked. To develop a tasty treat, cooks often put nuts and fruits mixed with butter and sugar in the bottom of the skillet, cover it with batter and let it cook. When it was done, they flipped it over and served. Fast forward to the 20th century. On the islands of Hawaii, a food dynasty was developing around the pineapple via the Dole family. How does one get a big fruit like pineapple into a tiny can? Fruits are perishable, and if one wanted to sell them year around anywhere in the world, they needed to be canned. In 1911 Dole engineers developed a coring machine for pineapple that created the now familiar rings. These rings, readily available all over the world, soon inspired cooks. The first printed recipe for an upside-down pineapple cake appears to be in 1924 in the city of Seattle, Washington, US. The cookbook was sold to raise funds for a charity, and the following year a full-color picture and recipe appeared in a Gold Medal Flour advertisement dated November 1925.

The last workweek of April is National Playground Safety Week in the United States. It's a week to focus on the importance of playground safety, including accident prevention or stranger danger. Playgrounds play a critical role in the future of every nation. They are where children spend (or should spend) a large portion of their time, and for inner city children specifically, playgrounds are often the only 'yard' they have. Take this week to contemplate your local play areas and affect any changes that may be needed.

Ridván (1863): April 20 - May 2

Ridvan is the name for paradise in Iraq. In the Baha'i faith, the festival known as Ridvan celebrates the faith's founder, the prophet Baha'u'llah, who spent 12 days at Baghdad's Ridvan garden in 1863. At Ridvan, he proclaimed himself the messenger of God, and the faithful believe Baha'u'lla is the most recent manifestation of God. The first, ninth, and twelfth days of Ridvan are considered holy and faith holidays for believers.

World Night in Defense of Starlight, also called "World Night in Defense of the Night Sky and the Right to Observe the Stars as a cultural, scientific and environmental humankind heritage," exists to help people of the city see actual starlight at least once a year. In marijuana culture, the number 420 is code for smoking pot (reefer, weed, marijuana, or any other names it goes by), and the reason today is Weed Day. The holiday has continued to be celebrated by marijuana enthusiasts worldwide since 1971.

Work Zone Awareness Week, Ntl.: April 20-24

Each year in the spring, National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) brings national attention to motorist and worker safety and mobility issues in work zones. Since 1999, FHWA has worked with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) to coordinate and sponsor the event. Over the years, other transportation partners have joined the effort to support NWZAW. In addition to a National event conducted each year, many States host their NWZAW events.

Youth Violence Prevention Week: April 20-24

Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) is proud to be a founding partner of the National Youth Violence Prevention Campaign. This campaign aims to raise awareness and educate students, teachers, school administrators, counselors, school resource officers, school staff, parents, and the public on effective ways to prevent or reduce youth Violence. This week-long national education initiative involves activities that demonstrate the positive role young people can have in making their school and community safer. SAVE through Sandy Hook Promise serves as the crossroads to the campaign and provides countless resources to prepare for the event, including the official campaign Action Kit that serves as a step-by-step planning guide, suggestions for how each sector of the community can support the campaign, activity ideas, links to national organizations sponsoring the event, articles, and interviews on violence prevention, and much, much more!

Antiqua Sailing Week (AG): April 21-27

Antigua Sailing Week started in 1968 when friends and hoteliers got together to hold a regatta (sailboat or yacht race). Antigua Hotel Association sponsored the first Antigua Sailing Week, which occurred June 8-15, 1968. Festivities included a three-day ‘Lord Nelson Regatta’ with sailing yachts of up to 135 feet in length, power boat races, deep sea fishing, and Sunfish sailing contests. There was also a two-day race among Antigua’s workboat fishermen. The inaugural Antigua Sailing Week was a huge success and repeated the following year, with dates moved up to May 31 through June 7, 1969. And so it went each subsequent year, with new sponsors coming on board and the program of events growing and evolving.
