The International Camel and Ostrich Races, a quirky and lively event, are a staple of Virginia City, Nevada's event calendar. They offer a unique blend of historical tradition, humor, and excitement. The origin of this unusual tradition traces back to the 1950s when the local newspaper editor, looking to boost tourism, claimed camel racing was a popular pastime in the city. To his surprise, the San Francisco Chronicle took the claim seriously and sent a reporter to cover the event. Virginia City hastily organized the first race to maintain the ruse leading to a 60-year-plus tradition. Today camels, ostriches, and zebras ridden by jockeys participate in the races, creating an unforgettable spectacle for spectators. The three-day event includes a parade, music performances, and a fair-like atmosphere in the historical wild west city where the 1960s television series "Bonanza" was filmed. Charity, Intl. Day of (1997): September 5

Annually on the anniversary of the death of Mother Theresa (September 5, 1997), the United Nation's International Day of Charity focuses on giving back to the community via time, money, or expertise. Charity is one of the foundational principles of every primary faith and is considered a bedrock of humanity. Mother Teresa, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910, was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary. The poverty she saw in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, moved her to serve the poorest of the poor. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation dedicated to serving those in great need. The organization established hospices, orphanages, leper houses, and schools worldwide. Mother Teresa received numerous awards throughout her life, including the Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize in 1962 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. However, she also faced criticism for her views on contraception and abortion and the living conditions in the establishments she founded. She died in 1997 and was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta by Pope Francis in 2016.

Checkers or Dog in Politics Day commemorates the 'Checkers Speech' by Vice Presidential candidate Richard Nixon on September 23, 1953. The Checkers Speech garnered the largest television audience then, with about 60 million Americans watching it, leading to a public outpouring of support. Richard Nixon was accused of using his campaign contributions for his personal use. Nixon went to Los Angeles to defend himself and delivered a speech to the public for half an hour. At the end of his speech, he stated that he intended to keep only one gift, a dog named Checkers; now you know how Checkers Day got its name. Nixon would become the President of the United States from January 20, 1969 – August 9, 1974.
