Attendance Awareness Month: September

06:20 AM | -
ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH: HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSISTENT SCHOOL ATTENDANCE Every September, the United States observes Attendance Awareness Month, an initiative emphasizing regular school attendance's critical role in a child's education and overall development. Attendance Works, a national organization dedicated to improving school attendance policies and practices, leads this month-long campaign. THE HISTORY OF ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH Attendance Awareness Month was launched in 2013 by Attendance Works and a coalition of education and community organizations. The initiative draws attention to the alarming rates of chronic absenteeism in schools and mobilizes schools, families, and communities to take action. Since its inception, the campaign has grown, involving thousands of schools and community groups nationwide to promote the importance of daily attendance. TOP FIVE REASONS CHILDREN MISS SCHOOL IN THE UNITED STATES Illness—Physical health issues, including chronic conditions like asthma or short-term illnesses such as colds and flu, are leading causes of absenteeism. Family Issues—Unstable housing, domestic violence, and other family challenges can lead to children missing school. Mental Health—Anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues can prevent students from attending school regularly. Transportation Problems—Lack of reliable transportation can hinder students' ability to get to school consistently. Bullying—Fear of bullying or feeling unsafe at school can cause students to avoid attending. THE IMPORTANCE OF SCHOOL ATTENDANCE Regular school attendance is crucial for academic success and social development. Students who attend school consistently are likelier to achieve higher grades, develop critical thinking skills, and build strong relationships with peers and teachers. Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, can lead to significant learning gaps, increased dropout rates, and long-term negative impacts on a student's future opportunities. HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH Raise Awareness—Share information about the importance of school attendance on social media, in community newsletters, and at local events. Engage Families—Schools and community organizations can host workshops and provide resources to help families understand the importance of attendance and how to address barriers. Recognize Good Attendance—Implement reward systems and recognition programs for students with good attendance records. Support Students—Provide resources such as tutoring, counseling, and health services to help address issues that may cause absenteeism. Advocate for Policy Changes—Support policies that promote school attendance, such as improved transportation options, mental health resources, and family support services. CONSEQUENCES OF MISSING TOO MUCH SCHOOL When a child misses too much school, it can have severe consequences. Chronic absenteeism can lead to academic struggles, including lower test scores and an increased likelihood of repeating a grade. Socially, students may feel disconnected from their peers and teachers, leading to isolation and increased risk of dropping out. Long-term, poor attendance can affect a student's ability to graduate and pursue higher education or employment opportunities. Attendance Awareness Month is a critical reminder of keeping students engaged and present in the classroom. By addressing the root causes of absenteeism and promoting a culture of attendance, communities can help ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed academically and personally.

Bacon Day, Intl.: September 5

06:20 AM | -
BACON! Bacon, Bacon, Bacon, Bacon, Bacon, Bacon, Bacon, Bacon, Bacon, Bacon, Bacon, Bacon... It's International Bacon Day! What doesn't go great with bacon? Maybe chocolate. We could be wrong. Some people swear by bacon chocolate chip cookies with whisky. Ice cream might be pushing it too, though we have heard of bacon ice cream. However, just about everything else is amazing with bacon! PS: For those on halal, kosher or vegan diets, nobody said your bacon couldn't be turkey, beef or plant based. Balance Awareness Week, Intl.: September 13-19

06:20 AM | -
BALANCE AWARENESS WEEK: HIGHLIGHTING STABILITY IN HEALTH Each September, Balance Awareness Week is observed globally, focusing on balance's crucial role in overall health and well-being. This annual campaign, led by the Vestibular Disorders Association (VeDA), aims to increase public awareness about balance disorders and encourage early diagnosis and treatment. VeDA collaborates with healthcare providers, researchers, and patient advocacy groups to spread knowledge and support affected individuals. The primary goal of Balance Awareness Week is to educate the public about balance disorders, their symptoms, and their impact on daily life. The campaign seeks to reduce the stigma associated with balance issues and promote resources and strategies to help individuals manage and improve their balance. WHY BALANCE IS IMPORTANT Balance is essential for performing everyday activities safely and effectively. It helps prevent falls, a leading cause of injury, particularly among older adults. Good balance is also crucial for maintaining mobility, independence, and overall quality of life. It involves the coordinated efforts of the vestibular system, vision, and proprioception (the sense of body position). WARNING SIGNS OF BALANCE ISSUES Several warning signs may indicate that someone is experiencing balance problems, including: Dizziness or Vertigo—A sensation of spinning or moving when standing still. Unsteadiness—Difficulty maintaining a stable position while standing or walking. Frequent Falls—Increased incidence of tripping or falling. Nausea or Vomiting—Often associated with vertigo or dizziness. Blurry Vision—Trouble focusing or tracking objects, especially when moving. Disorientation—Feeling confused or having difficulty concentrating. HOW TO IMPROVE BALANCE Individuals can take several steps to improve their balance and reduce the risk of falls: Exercise Regularly—Activities such as tai chi, yoga, and balance exercises strengthen muscles and enhance coordination. Physical Therapy—Working with a physical therapist can help address specific balance issues through targeted exercises and training. Healthy Lifestyle—Maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, and staying hydrated can support overall physical health and balance. Medication Review—Consult a healthcare provider to review medications that might affect balance. Home Modifications—Changing the living environment by removing tripping hazards and installing grab bars to enhance safety. Balance Awareness Week plays a pivotal role in educating the public about the significance of balance and the impact of balance disorders. By highlighting the warning signs and promoting effective management strategies, the campaign aims to improve the quality of life for individuals affected by balance issues. It is possible to enhance stability and prevent falls through increased awareness and proactive measures, contributing to better overall health and well-being.

Today marks the anniversary of the birth of the first Prima Ballerina Assoluta, Perinea Legnani, on September 30, 1863. Legnani first gained worldwide recognition in 1893 when, as Cinderella, she performed 32 consecutive fouettes en tournant at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia. At the time of her career, she was considered the best ballet dancer in the world, and her brilliance was in her technique. On Legnani's birthday, Lario Danza International Ballet holds an annual competition for young dancers. The Pierina Legnani Award is given. Only 11 women in history have earned the title of Prima Ballerina Assoluta. Ms. Legnani died on November 30, 1923, in Italy.

Battle of Britain Day (UK) (1940): September 15

06:20 AM | -
Battle of Britain marks the turning point of the 4 month attack by Nazi Germany on England. The battle occurred during the summer and fall of 1940. By this time, World War II approached its first anniversary, and Hitler's forces had over-run much of Europe. Britain was the final prize he wanted, and he set his sights on the island nation. Up until this time, the German military appeared to be unstoppable. Hitler believed the air assault on Britain in July of 1940 would be easy. However, the English had a secret weapon, the Dowding System, which allowed the Brits to deploy their air force throughout the country, back by radar. The Dowding System provided early warning of attacks, allowing the Royal Air Force to engage the Luftwaffe effectively. On September 7, London became the target of the bombing campaigns. By September 15, 1940, the British Royal Air Force got the upper hand. Though the battle would continue into October, today is the day it became clear to the German high command that taking Britain would require more resources and time. They eventually withdrew, and Hitler's forces never conquered Britain. Within 14 months, the United States would enter the war.
