Bear Necessities Month: September

06:20 AM | -
BEAR NECESSITIES MONTH: HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPORTANCE OF BEAR CONSERVATION September is Bear Necessities Month, an annual observance dedicated to raising awareness about bear conservation and these majestic animals' vital role in our ecosystems. The Bear Conservation Alliance champions this month-long initiative with a coalition of wildlife organizations committed to protecting bear habitats and ensuring the survival of bear species. THE HISTORY OF BEAR CONSERVATION Conservation efforts for bears have a long and storied history, beginning in earnest in the early 20th century. As human activities such as logging, hunting, and urban expansion increasingly encroached on bear habitats, populations began to decline. In response, conservationists and wildlife organizations initiated measures to protect bears, including establishing protected areas, stricter hunting regulations, and public education campaigns. The Endangered Species Act of 1973 was a significant milestone, providing legal protections for several bear species and funding for conservation programs. TOP FIVE BEAR SPECIES NATIVE TO THE UNITED STATES American Black Bear—The most common bear species in North America, black bears live in forests, swamps, and mountains across the continent. Brown Bear (Grizzly Bear)—Found primarily in Alaska and parts of the western United States, grizzlies are known for their impressive size and distinctive hump. Polar Bear—Inhabiting the Arctic regions of Alaska, polar bears are well adapted to cold environments and depend on sea ice for hunting seals. Louisiana Black Bear—A subspecies of the American black bear, these bears are found in the lower Mississippi Valley and have benefited from recent conservation efforts. Kodiak Bear—A subspecies of the brown bear, Kodiak bears are native to the Kodiak Archipelago in Alaska and are among the most giant bears in the world. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEAR CONSERVATION Bear conservation is crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems. Bears play a significant role as apex predators and keystone species, influencing the populations of other animals and contributing to the balance of their habitats. Protecting bears also helps preserve biodiversity and ensures that future generations can experience the awe-inspiring presence of these animals. Furthermore, bears are often indicators of environmental health, and their conservation can signal broader ecological benefits. HOW TO CELEBRATE BEAR NECESSITIES MONTH Educate Yourself and Others—Learn about the different bear species and their challenges. Share information with friends and family to raise awareness. Support Conservation Organizations—Donate to or volunteer with organizations dedicated to bear conservation. Your support can make a significant impact. Visit Protected Areas—Spend time in national parks and wildlife reserves where bears live, supporting conservation efforts while appreciating these animals in their natural habitats. Advocate for Policy Change—Support policies and legislation that protect bear habitats and promote sustainable land use practices. Participate in Local Events—Many communities and conservation groups host events during Bear Necessities Month. Attend workshops, lectures, and activities to learn more and get involved. MUSICAL CONNECTION: "THE BARE NECESSITIES" A well-known song that addresses bears is "The Bare Necessities" from Disney's 1967 animated film The Jungle Book. Sung by Baloo, the Bear, the song emphasizes a carefree, nature-loving lifestyle and has become an iconic tune associated with bears and the simple joys of life. Bear Necessities Month is a time to celebrate and support the conservation of these magnificent creatures, ensuring they continue to thrive in the wild for generations to come.

Beard Day, World: September 5

06:20 AM | -
World Beard Day is believed to have originated over 1200 years ago with the Vikings and is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of September. On World Beard Day, bearded family members get to abstain from work and chores. The beardless members of the family traditionally show their support by waiting on the bearded hand and foot. Today, World Beard Day is about promoting and elevating the global status of the beard. While many countries and cities practice World Beard Day customs specific to their region, shaving on World Beard Day is universally considered highly disrespectful.

Beheading Day, Intl. (1685): September 2

06:20 AM | -
International Beheading Day marks the anniversary of the execution of Lady Alice Lisle on September 2, 1685, at the age of 63. Lady Lisle was part of the English gentry, and her crime was treason. She was found guilty of harboring John Hickes in her residence. Hickes was a preacher and non-conformist (at the time a severe crime) who participated in the Monmouth Rebellion against the king at the Battle of Sedgemoor. At her trial, Lady Lisle insisted she did not know that he was a wanted man and was offering shelter. Despite not knowing she was breaking the law, The Crown declared her guilty of treason, and her sentence was death. What makes Lady Lisle's execution unusual is motive. Evidence later revealed it was a revenge killing, a judicial murder ordered by Judge Jeffreys. The judge was engaged in several disagreements with Lady and Lord Lisle, and presiding over her trial, and passing her sentence, allowed him to settle a score. Today we refer to this as judicial misconduct and, depending upon circumstances, murder. The trial and beheading of Lady Lisle initiated reforms in England promoting the recusing of judges, litigators, government officials, and barristers involved in a trial where bias, personal gain, or affiliation could hamper their ability to uphold the law or serve impartially. Parliament issued Lady Lisle a posthumous pardon due to "the menaces and violence and other illegal practices" of Judge Jeffreys. The last beheading in England occurred in 1747.

At 9:20 AM, 32 Chechen terrorists attacked the school with guns, grenades, and bombs. The parents and students (approximately 1,200 people) were attending the annual first-day celebrations. Over the next three days, more than 334 people died, including 20% (186) of the school's children, most in the lower grades. Beslan is the worst terrorist attack targeting children in modern history.

Better Breakfast Month: September

06:20 AM | -
Better Breakfast Month coincides with back-to-school. Better Breakfast Month seeks to remind parents and children to eat breakfast if they want to do well at school or work. In a 2000 study of Boston Public School pilot breakfast programs, students who increased their breakfast participation rates increased their math grades, decreased their school absence and tardiness rate, and decreased emotional/behavioral problems. Nearly 60% of staff reported a positive change in student behavior and attentiveness. (Dr. Michael Murphy and Ronald Kleinman, Massachusetts General Hospital) According to a 2002 study conducted by Theresa Nicklas of Baylor College of Medicine, adolescents who eat breakfast are two to five times more likely than breakfast-skippers to consume at least two-thirds of the daily recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of calcium, magnesium, riboflavin, folacin, phosphorus, iron and vitamins A, B6 and D. Nicklas found that the intake of other vitamins and minerals – including zinc and calcium – as well as of protein and carbohydrates, was much higher among those who ate breakfast. Also, fat consumption was lower. (Journal of Adolescent Health, Volume 27, Issue 5). Better Breakfast Month appears to be the inspiration of Delaunay Communication Inc. in Seattle, Washington.

Bhadrapada Purnima (H): September 26

06:20 AM | -
THE END OF THE MONSOON SEASON BHADRAPADA PURNIMA Across India and in Hindu communities worldwide, the full moon of the month of Bhadrapada — known as Bhadrapada Purnima — is observed with prayer, fasting and acts of charity. Falling in August or September on the Gregorian calendar, the day holds both religious and seasonal significance, bridging the end of the monsoon and the coming of the autumn festivals. The observance celebrates the divine presence of Lord Vishnu, who is honored in his form as Anant — the eternal one. Many devotees take vows on this day, often marked by tying a sacred thread called the Anant Sutra on their wrists, symbolizing protection and spiritual continuity. Others offer prayers to Goddess Parvati or to rivers and natural forces, underscoring the day’s connection to fertility, renewal and cosmic balance. Rituals vary by region. In northern India, families often fast, bathe in holy rivers and recite the Vishnu Sahasranama (a hymn of a thousand names of Vishnu). In Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat, the day is linked to Anant Chaturdashi, which arrives later in the lunar cycle and concludes the Ganesh festival. In rural areas, villagers traditionally mark the full moon with community gatherings, food offerings and folk performances that celebrate the harvest cycle. The charitable dimension of Bhadrapada Purnima is emphasized. Many devotees distribute food, clothing or alms, believing that service to others strengthens the blessings gained from fasting and worship. Temples see larger crowds on this day, as families gather for evening aarti and moonlit prayers. For Hindus, Bhadrapada Purnima is more than a date on the lunar calendar. It is a day to reflect on endurance, prosperity and divine protection — themes that echo through the transition from monsoon rains to the festive season ahead.
