Veep Day (1974): August 9

06:20 AM | -
On August 9, 1974, President Richard Nixon became the first president to resign from office in US history. That same day, his ‘veep’ Vice President Gerald Ford assumed the presidency and became the 38th president of the United States and led the country from August 9, 1974 – January 20, 1977. Robert Birch of Pun Corps created this event. Mr. Birch died in 2005.

Velociraptor Attack Prevention Month: August

06:20 AM | -
Velociraptor Attack Prevention Month is the creation of a web development company Velociraptor Aerospace Dynamics. The organization seeks to have a little fun and raise awareness of its products and services. Of course, Velociraptors no longer exist, and they’ve been extinct for tens of millions of years. Still, it’s a fun event, and it is getting noticed. We heard about it on Saudi Aramco Radio in Saudi Arabia! From the site, a little tongue, and cheek humor: “Velociraptor attack is the third leading cause of death for men age 27-29. However, everyone must consider the implications of velociraptors: young and old, men, women, and transgendered persons. The American Society for Velociraptor Attack Prevention is a bi-partisan group of professionals dedicated to the diffusion of knowledge concerning velociraptor attack prevention. The velociraptor is a bipedal carnivore with a long, stiffened tail and is distinguished from other dromaeosaurids by its long and low skull and upturned snout. It bores a relatively large, sickle-shaped claw, typical of dromaeosaurid and troodontid dinosaurs. This enlarged claw, up to 67 millimeters (2.6 in) long around its outer edge, is a predatory device used to tear into the prey, delivering a fatal blow. Velociraptors are often found on tropical islands, converted to millionaire amusement parks, but are commonly sighted in the Pacific Northwest. Of the essential facts you should know about velociraptors: a) Velociraptors hunt in packs and are known to form an equilateral triangle around their prey. b) Velociraptors have a top speed of 25 m/s on open terrain, ten m/s while wounded, and ten m/s in indoor laboratories. c) Velociraptors can open doors but are slowed by them. They can open an initial door in approximately five minutes and take half that time for each subsequent door. d) Velociraptors do not know fear. _____________ Enjoy the month!

Victims Acts of Violence Based on Religious Belief, Day Commemorating, Intl.: August 22

06:20 AM | -
"GENEVA (21 August 2019) – States have an important role to play in promoting religious tolerance and cultural diversity by promoting and protecting human rights, including freedom of religion or belief, say a group of UN independent experts*. The experts urged States to step up their efforts to combat intolerance, discrimination, and violence against people based on religion or belief, including against members of religious minorities and people who are not religious. Their comments come in a statement marking the first International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief on 22 August: "We welcome the decision of the UN to designate 22 August as the international day to commemorate the victims of acts of violence based on religion or belief. This is a great opportunity to raise awareness about religious intolerance and violence, and discrimination against anyone based on their religion or belief. Any distinction, exclusion, restriction, or preference based on religion or belief which has the effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment, or exercise of human rights and fundamental freedoms on an equal basis would amount to religious intolerance and discrimination. This was made clear in the 1981 General Assembly Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and of Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief. We have observed violence in the name of religion around the world perpetrated by States and non-state groups, leading to discrimination, persecution, arbitrary arrests or detention, enforced disappearances, sexual violence, and killings of many people based on their religion or belief." Victims of Enforced Disappearances, Intl. Day for: August 30

06:20 AM | -
Enforced disappearance, also referred to as rendition, is a strategy to spread terror within society. The insecurity generated by this practice is not limited to the close relatives of the disappeared but impacts their communities and society. Enforced disappearance is a global problem. Initially associated with military dictatorships, enforced disappearances occur in complex situations of internal conflict as a means of political repression. Of particular concern are: 1) Ongoing harassment of human rights defenders, victims' relatives, witnesses, and legal counsel dealing with cases of enforced disappearance. 2) States use it under the guise of counter-terrorism as an excuse for breaching obligations. On December 21, 2010, by its resolution 65/209, the UN General Assembly expressed deep concern about the increase in disappearances. The resolution focused on "the growing number of reports concerning harassment, ill-treatment, and intimidation of witnesses of disappearances or relatives of persons who have disappeared." The United Nations declared August 30 the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances beginning in 2011.

These five countries accounted for 75% of all deaths from terrorism in 2017. International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism is a United Nations initiative designed to focus resources and attention on the survivors of terrorism, assisting them with the grieving and recovery process, physically, psychologically, socially, and financially. “I ask that we all reflect on the lives that have been changed forever due to terrorism. Let us commit to showing victims that they are not alone and that the international community stands in solidarity with them, wherever they may be. In their call for healing and justice, they speak for all of us.” — UN Secretary-General, António Guterres

Water Quality Month: August

06:20 AM | -
National Water Quality Month focuses on where water comes from and the protection of its quality. Sweet water, the water you can drink, is either surface water or groundwater. Protecting its quality includes keeping it free from pollution. The event champion offers the following tips for protecting our water. _____________ 1) Sweep your driveway rather than hosing it off. 2) Use a commercial car wash rather than cleaning your car at home. 3) Pick up after your dog. 4) Dispose of used motor oil properly. One quart of motor oil can contaminate more than 250,000 gallons of water. 5) Pesticides and fertilizers travel through runoff into the soil and contaminate groundwater. 6) Pick up litter on the streets to prevent it from entering storm drains and waterways. 7) Use phosphate-free cleaners. 8) Properly dispose of prescription medications. Anything flushed can enter the water system. ____________ For more tips, see http://www.drinktap.org.
