If you've ever had a garden, then you know by the end of summer, you have zucchini coming out of your ears. Sneak Zucchini onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day is your chance to get rid of some of that extra healthy squash. A couple started this idea in Pennsylvania. At the end of summer, they would give their neighbors zucchini baskets with a selection of veggies, preserves, and fresh produce from local growers. It's a fun tradition and a great way to get rid of all that extra zucchini and bring a smile to your neighbor's face.

A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes into the Earth's shadow and obscures a portion of the moon. This partial will be seen in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Western Asia. Eclipses can occur one to three times a year and fall into the following categories: Partial—A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through a portion of the Earth's shadow, the umbra, covering a part of the Moon, giving a reddish-brown hue to the side shadowed by the Earth. Penumbral—A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth's outer shadow, also known as the penumbra, dimming its intensity and giving it a gray or brownish color. Total—A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth's shadow completely covers the Moon as it passes in front of the Sun. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon appears reddish-brown. Unlike a solar eclipse, you can watch a lunar eclipse with the naked eye.

Mawlid an-Nabi, or Mawlid in Islam, is the day set aside for the birth of the Prophet Muhammed. Practicing Muslims usually follow the mention of his name with "Peace be upon him" or the initials PBUH. Mawlid occurs on the 12th day of Rabi' al-Awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar, which is why it moves from year to year. The founder of the faith of Islam lived from 570 AD - June 8, 632 AD. His full name was Abū al-Qāsim Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim. His name is quite long, a tribal tradition in Arab and Persian cultures. Each "ibn" designates "son of" in parental lineage. The Prophet rests in Medina, Saudi Arabia, beneath the mosque known as "The Green Dome." Typically Muslims do not celebrate this day. Instead, it is a day of reflection and thought.

The Zhong Yuan (also known as Zhongyuan Festival by Taoists or Yu Lan Pen Festival by Buddhists) is the day the Chinese respect their ancestors and all who have passed via sacrifices. It is believed that ghosts emerge on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month and visit the living. The Chinese have other festivals throughout the year that honor the dead, and Zhong Yuan is unique as it honors all persons who have passed, not just family.

International Owl Awareness Day celebrates the winged messenger of wisdom, the owl. There are 236 known species of owls, falling into two families, the Tytonidae and Strigidae. Thirteen owls are currently on the critical or endangered species list, including the Pernambuco Pygmy Owl and Siau Scops Owl, both with fewer than 50 remaining. A large owl can consume over 2,000 rodents, fish, and small animals annually, making them essential for pest control. Smaller owls keep the insect population under control, and the birds of prey live on six of seven continents. The largest species is the Blakiston's Fish Owl, with a wingspan of 6.5 feet (1.98 meters) and weighing over eight pounds (3.6 kilograms). The smallest owl is the Long-whiskered Owlets, with a wingspan of 4.1 -4.6 inches (10 - 11.5 centimeters) and weighing less than 2 ounces (0.06 kilograms).

Paul Bunyan Day (1906): August 10*

Paul Bunyan Day honors the character of literary legend. Paul Bunyan is the giant lumberjack in American folklore. He and his companion, Babe the Blue Ox, are characters in numerous songs and stories popularized by just as many authors. The first known printed story about Bunyan, "Caught on the Run," ran in the Duluth News Tribune on August 4, 1904. Its author is unknown. One of the more notable authors is James MacGillivray, who wrote about Paul Bunyan in "Round River" in the July 24, 1910 edition of the Detroit News. Round River was an expanded version of his first story on Bunyan, which appeared on August 10, 1906, Oscoda Press. Today marks the anniversary of that story.
