Pecan Pie Day, Ntl. Chocolate: August 20

National Chocolate Pecan Pie is the food celebration. A Thanksgiving and Christmas time table staple, pecan pie was first baked by the French in New Orleans. However, it was Native Americans who first introduced pecans to the French. Personal Story from Laura: "My first encounter with pecans occurred when I was about six. Mom and Dad had another couple over to play Bridge. It turns out they didn't have enough pecan pie for the adults and kids, so they told us kids, all four of us, that you had to be 18 years of age to eat pecan pie. We believed them, and I would be 18 the first time I tasted pecan pie. It is my favorite today, but I can't believe my parents coveted it! Or that I believed them. We still laugh about that to this day." So, enjoy your pecans this month, but please don't tell your children they can't eat pecan pie until they are adults. They might believe you!"

Photography Day, World (1839): August 19

On August 19, 1839, the French government purchased the patent for the Daguerreotype process from Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce. His is the invention that made photography possible. Rather than keep it just for the French people, the government gifted it to the world so that all people, no matter where they lived, would have access to photography. This selfless gift of technology is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the patent acquisition as World Photography Day.

Picnic Day (AU): August 3

Railway Heritage Picnic Day, or simply Picnic Day, is celebrated in Australia's Northern Territory and coincides with official bank holidays in the UK, selected provinces, and commonwealth countries. Australia's Northern Territory's Railway Heritage Picnic Day marks the freeing of indentured Chinese laborers, at the time referred to as Coolie (British slang for Asian indentured servant), were under contract with the North Australia Railway. Like in the United States, much of the railway track was laid by Chinese laborers; it was backbreaking work, and many did not survive. In 1888, after completing the first part of the railway, the Governor of the Southern Territories reversed its policy of requiring Asian workers to leave Australia upon job completion. Instead, he gave them a choice, to return home or become part of Australian culture. Upon being granted freeman status, many Asian laborers chose to stay in Australia and build a life. How did the former indentured servants celebrate? They had a picnic in Adelaide, thus Picnic Day!

Pirating remains a severe problem in several parts of the world, most notably off the horn of Africa, the Gulf of Aden, and off the coast of India. The World Shipping Council notes: "The issue of piracy against merchant's vessels poses a significant threat to world shipping. In 2011, 439 pirate attacks and 45 merchant vessels were hijacked worldwide. Two hundred thirty-seven of these attacks and 28 hijackings occurred in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia, and in the wider Indian ocean. As of spring 2012, there have been more than 51 attacks off Somalia (121 worldwide), 11 hijackings off Somalia (13 worldwide), and over 158 hostages taken off Somalia. NATIONAL POET'S DAY: HONORING THE ART OF VERSE National Poet's Day was established in 2001 by C. Daniel Rhodes and Natalie Danielle Rhodes of Hoover, Alabama, to honor poets and the words they weave as a tribute to poetic expression and the people who dedicate themselves to it. Though poetry is as varied as the cultures that produce it, a handful of poets are recognized for their enduring impact. Among them are Homer, the ancient Greek author of The Iliad and The Odyssey; William Shakespeare, whose sonnets and plays shaped English literature; Dante Alighieri, the Italian author of The Divine Comedy; Li Bai, the Tang Dynasty poet celebrated in Chinese literary tradition; and Rumi, the 13th-century Persian mystic whose verses transcend time and place. Poetry's roots stretch deep into human history. Long before poetry, people relied on rhythmic chants and rhymes to pass down myths, laws, and histories. These oral traditions made it easier to remember stories and helped bond communities. Some of the earliest known written poems include The Epic of Gilgamesh, dating to around 2000 BCE in Mesopotamia, and the Classic of Poetry in ancient China, a collection of more than 300 works from the 11th to 7th centuries BCE. In the ancient Mediterranean, Greek poets like Sappho created personal lyric verse, while Homer's epics offered sweeping narratives. Popsicle Day honors the popsicle on the anniversary of patent US 1505592 for a frozen confection on a stick, August 19, 1924. Popsicles are the accidental creation of 11-year-old Frank Epperson. On a cool winter evening, he left a mixture of soda flavoring and water on the porch. The following day, he discovered that the drink had frozen during the night’s low temperature and tasted good. Popsicles became a sensation at a fireman’s ball in 1922, where they were introduced. Epperson sold his pops on the stick at Neptune beach in California in 1923. First named Epsicle (Epperson icicle), this simple frozen flavored water or juice on a wooden stick has become a favorite summer staple worldwide.

National Potato Day honors the versatile root popular the world over. Potato starch packs more vitamins and minerals than other carbohydrates, including wheat and barley. Because of this and its ease of cultivation, potatoes quickly became a staple of European diets once introduced. Potatoes are native to South America, most notably Bolivia and Peru, and were brought back to Europe by Spanish Conquistadors in 1536. In 1589, Sir Walter Raleigh brought the potato to Ireland. By 1621, potatoes returned to the New World and arrived in North America. The potato was the first organic crop cultivated and grown in space in October 1995. The Inca were the first to cultivate potatoes between 8,000 and 5,000 BC.
