Old Time Fiddlers' Contest and Festival is a citywide event in Weiser, Idaho. First run in 1953, this is the largest fiddling and folk festival in the United States. Enjoy the free outdoor entertainment stage, shop at the booths, visit the beer garden, partake in the carnival, and enjoy the family atmosphere in one place. Highlights include the Fireman's Hose Competition and Battle of the Bluegrass Bands right after the parade. Daily entertainment from 10 a.m. until closing each day of the event. Firearms Day, Ntl. (1934): June 26

The National Firearms Act (NFA), or Title II of the Federal Firearms Laws enacted on June 26, 1934, imposes a statutory excise tax on the manufacture and transfer of certain firearms and mandates the registration of those firearms. The Act was passed shortly after the repeal of Prohibition. All ownership transfers of registered NFA firearms occur through the federal NFA registry. The NFA also requires that the owner's permanent transport of NFA firearms across state lines must be reported to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF, or BATFE). With the increased attention guns are getting in recent years, National Firearms Act Day is becoming increasingly crucial for gun ownership advocates.

Fireworks Safety Months: June 1-July 4

Fireworks Safety Month is observed in June to emphasize that fireworks can be fun and cause harm when mishandled. Sixty percent of fireworks injuries recorded in the US occur on or around the July 4th holiday. Most injuries occur to the hands, eyes, and fingers. Not to be confused with Friday Fish Fry Day (a different sponsor), National Fish & Chip Day first ran in 2015. For 2024 and 2025 it falls on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Fish and Chips played a big part in keeping morale up during WWII. The day honors their place in British history and this historical event. NEODA, the National Edible Oil Distributors Association, sponsors the event. Fish and Chips are considered the national dish of the United Kingdom.

Fishing, Intl. Day Against Illegal Fishing: May 5

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities pose a serious threat to the sustainability of global fisheries, leading to a loss of 11–26 million tonnes of fish each year and costing the world's economy $10–23 billion annually. This impacts not just the fishing industry but also disrupts the balance of the marine ecosystem, threatening biodiversity. It undermines international efforts towards achieving food security, especially with the growing global population. In response to this challenge, the UN has adopted measures to effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing and IUU fishing as a part of its Sustainable Development Agenda (Goal 14, Target 4). The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has been actively promoting awareness about the detrimental effects of IUU fishing. To encourage responsible practices, the FAO adopted the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries in 1995, a voluntary agreement aiming for effective conservation, management, and development of living aquatic resources. Subsequently, in 2009, the FAO introduced a binding agreement, the Agreement on Port State Measures, to deter and eliminate IUU fishing. Furthermore, 5 June has been declared as the International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing to emphasize the importance of this issue. This date commemorates the day when the Agreement on Port State Measures came into effect. In addition, 2022 has been declared as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture, emphasizing the role of small-scale fishers who make up 90% of the global fisheries workforce. Ultimately, the fight against IUU fishing is not limited to the actions of governments and international organizations. Consumers have a role to play as well, as it is estimated that 1 in every 5 fish comes from IUU fishing. By being more discerning about the sources of the seafood they consume, individuals can contribute to the fight against IUU fishing and promote sustainable practices.

Flag Day (1777): June 14

Flag Day was created in 1886 by Bernard Cigrand, a school teacher in Wisconsin. He decided to hold a Flag Birthday Party on June 14, the Stars and Stripes US flag creation anniversary in 1777. Cigrand continued to advocate for this day by advertising it in magazines and newspapers. Soon, people from New York and some organizations in Pennsylvania started to follow suit. They began to display flags in various public buildings and homes. Schoolchildren were also given small flags and were encouraged to sing patriotic songs. On June 14, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that there should be a National Flag Day. It was in August of 1949 that this occasion became official through the signing of legislation by President Harry Truman, making June 14 National Flag Day.

National Flag Week always centers on June 14, National Flag Day. This week, Americans display the American flag in their homes and public buildings. Other activities to commemorate this occasion include flag-raising ceremonies, essay competitions, and street parades. The National Flag Foundation is actively seeking activities that can nurture the love of the American flag and the traditions that come along with it to keep this occasion alive. Flamingo Day, Pink (1957): June 23

Pink Flamingo Day honors the 1957 pink flamingo lawn décor creator Don Featherstone. It occurs on the day after his death in 2015. This event was declared a holiday by the former mayor of Leominster, Massachusetts, Dean Mazzaralla. Its champion is the Lawn Greeting Association. Lawn greetings, also known as a ‘yard card,’ are a prank played on loved ones and friends. A popular version of a yard card is installing a flock of plastic pink flamingos overnight. The prankster hires a company that arrives after dark and fills the recipient’s lawn with various critters, including flamingos, dinosaurs, cows, and more. The pranked wakes up in the morning to a laugh. People do this instead of sending flowers or cards for special events. History of the Plastic Pink Flamingo: Don Featherstone hails from a small town in Massachusetts called Leominster. Hired by a plastic molding company called Union Products, Don created clay molds of animals for plastic lawn ornaments. These critters included cows, roosters, pigs, and more. After studying a National Geographic magazine, Featherstone created what would become an American icon: the plastic pink flamingo. For almost 50 years, Union Products manufactured these pink birds. Several other companies tried to reproduce their versions of pink flamingos in different shapes and shades of pink. Sadly, due to increasing production costs, Union Products ceased all production and closed its doors for good. Many flamingo fans feared the pink flamingo lawn ornament would become extinct. Folklife Festival, Smithsonian (US-DC): July 2-7

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, established in 1967, honors contemporary living and cultural traditions and celebrates those who practice and sustain them. Produced annually by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the Festival has featured participants from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. The free festival occurs every summer on the National Mall, near the Fourth of July holiday. In 2019, it moved to the last weekend of June. It is an educational, research-based presentation that features master artisans and other tradition bearers. We invite visitors to sing and dance along, try craft and game workshops, learn traditional recipes, ask questions, and participate in this unique cultural exchange. Food Safety Day, World: June 7

Improving food safety is crucial as it directly affects people's health and wellbeing. Consuming unsafe food can lead to foodborne illnesses, often caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemical substances. These illnesses, of which there are an estimated 600 million cases annually, pose significant health risks, especially to vulnerable and marginalized populations such as women, children, people affected by conflict, and migrants. Notably, about 420,000 people die each year after eating contaminated food, with children under 5 years carrying 40% of the foodborne disease burden. Food safety measures ensure that food remains safe at all stages of the food chain, from production, harvest, processing, storage, and distribution to preparation and consumption. By preventing, detecting, and managing foodborne risks, we can contribute to food security, human health, economic prosperity, market access, tourism, and sustainable development. World Food Safety Day, observed on June 7th, is facilitated jointly by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This day aims to inspire action to improve food safety globally, raise awareness about the importance of food safety in the public agenda, and reduce the global burden of foodborne diseases.

Food Truck Day, Eat at a, Ntl.: June 27

Created in 2017, National Eat at a Food Truck Day celebrates the thousands of entrepreneurs that feed America with food trucks featuring gourmet, street food, and ethnic cuisine. The first food trucks in America were carts and date back to New York City (New Amsterdam) in 1691. Over the years, they developed along with technology and social trends. Chuck Wagons became commonplace to feed mobile workforces like cattlemen in the 1860s. Entrepreneurs outfitted covered wagons with everything you'd find in a diner, making diners portable in the 1870s. During WWI, the US Army used them to feed troops in the field. Oscar Mayer's Weiner Mobile is the most iconic food wagon, which debuted in 1936. The first food truck most people encounter is the ice cream truck. These first appeared in the 1950s. Taco trucks emerged in 1974 in Los Angeles as an extension of a bar's kitchen. The 1980s saw the creation of hamburger and sandwich trucks, which gained popularity on college campuses. By the 2000s, food trucks went multi-cultural. Today you can find just about any style of food on food trucks, with Asian, Middle Eastern, and Juice Bars becoming some of the most sought-after.
