Forget-Me-Not Days / The Longest Day, Alzheimer's: June 21

06:20 AM | -
Forget-Me-Not Days and The Longest Day, the Alzheimer's Association's annual fundraiser on the summer solstice in 2019. Forget-Me-Not Days began with Bankers Life and Casualty Company, the national life and health insurer, in 2003 as the company's annual fundraiser to benefit the Alzheimer's Association. Bankers, agents, employees, and association volunteers nationwide hit the streets wearing distinctive green aprons and handing out packets of Forget-Me-Not seeds to raise awareness of the disease. One hundred percent of the donations collected benefit the Alzheimer's Association. Since 2003, Bankers has helped raise over US$5 million for the Alzheimer's Association through this fundraiser.

Forklift Safety Day: June 10

06:20 AM | -
National Forklift Safety Day is an annual event dedicated to promoting forklift safety awareness and the importance of proper operator training. Although the specific date may vary each year, it typically occurs on the second Tuesday of June. The event is organized by the Industrial Truck Association (ITA) in the United States, and other organizations may host similar events around the world. National Forklift Safety Day aims to reduce the number of workplace accidents involving forklifts by emphasizing the significance of safe operation, proper maintenance, and adherence to industry standards. Activities on this day may include seminars, webinars, training workshops, equipment demonstrations, and the distribution of educational materials related to forklift safety. Companies, organizations, and individuals involved in material handling, warehousing, and other industries that use forklifts participate in this event to encourage a safer work environment. This day also provides an opportunity for industry professionals to share best practices, experiences, and innovative ideas to improve overall forklift safety.

Foster a Pet Month, Ntl.: June

06:20 AM | -
"If fewer than two percent of pet-owning households in the US fostered one pet a year, we could eliminate unnecessary euthanasia in shelters tomorrow," notes the Petco Foundation, champions of National Foster a Pet Month. Fostering is excellent for the pet and great for you. Rather than spending life in a cage with hundreds of others, it allows the pet to be loved, played with, and cared for. It will enable you to test-drive a pet or see if your family is ready to become a forever home. If you want to become a pet foster parent, check with your local Petco store any time of the year.

Friday Fish Fry Day (UK): June 6*

06:20 AM | -
FRIDAY FISH FRY DAY A Delicious Tradition with Deep Roots Friday Fish Fry Day brings communities together across the United Kingdom to celebrate a beloved culinary tradition. This annual event, held on the first Friday of every June, honors the rich history and cultural significance of the fish fry, a meal deeply embedded in American heritage. HISTORY AND PURPOSE Frying Fish Fry as a street food originated in the early 19th century under Queen Victoria's reign. Fish became the staple alternative, and over time, the Friday fish fry evolved from a simple meal to a communal event. Friday Fish Fry Day was officially established in 2009 by the National Fish Fry Association (NFFA) to celebrate this enduring tradition and its impact on American culture. The day's purpose is not only to indulge in delicious fried fish but also to recognize the historical and social importance of the fish fry in bringing people together. BEHIND THE CELEBRATION The NFFA, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the fish fry tradition, drives Friday Fish Fry Day. The association works tirelessly to support local fish fry events, provide resources for organizers, and educate the public about fish frying cultural and historical significance. A TASTE OF TRADITION Friday Fish Fry Day features a variety of events nationwide, from small-town church gatherings to large-scale festivals. The typical menu includes battered and fried fish, often accompanied by sides like coleslaw, fries, and hush puppies. Each region has its twist, with variations in fish species and preparation methods reflecting local tastes and traditions. In addition to the culinary delights, Friday Fish Fry Day is a fundraiser for many community organizations, churches, and charities. The proceeds from these events often support local causes, enhancing the sense of community and collective goodwill. Friday Fish Fry Day is more than just a celebration of a delicious meal; it is a tribute to a tradition that has brought people together for generations. As communities gather to enjoy fried fish and camaraderie, they continue to honor the history and purpose behind this cherished American custom. The NFFA's efforts ensure that the legacy of the Friday fish fry remains a vibrant and integral part of American culture. Sources: National Fish Fry Association (NFFA)

Friday the 13th: June 13

06:20 AM | -
Friday the 13th is an unlucky day in Western superstition, and it occurs when the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday in the Gregorian calendar. The superstition surrounding this day may have arisen in the Middle Ages, originating from the story of Jesus' last supper and crucifixion in which there were 13 individuals present in the upper room on the 13th of Nisan (Maundy Thursday), the night before his death on Good Friday. While there is evidence of Friday and the number 13 being considered unlucky, there is no record of the two being referred to as incredibly unfortunate before the 19th century. According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day, making it the most feared day and date in history. Some people are so paralyzed by fear that they avoid doing business, taking flights, or even getting out of bed. An estimated US$800 to $900 million is lost in business on Friday the 13th, although no scientific evidence exists.

Fruit Fly Frenzy: June 15- July 15

06:20 AM | -
You know it is Fruit Fly Frenzy when you kick back to enjoy a nice glass of Cabernet and suddenly notice tiny flies inhabiting your glass' rim. Or you set the bananas out to ripen, only to see a circle dance of winged creatures excitedly hovering about. Yup! It is that time of year again. Fortunately, it doesn't last that long. Fruit flies have a lifespan of 40-50 days, and the female will lay several batches of eggs during that period. Alcohol and fermenting fruit attract them, and they will lay hundreds of eggs in a couple of hours, which hatch a few hours later. Ergo, Fruit Fly Frenzy. To prevent Fruit Fly Frenzy, use netting canopies over your fresh fruit and place a coaster over the mouth of your wine glass. Apple cider vinegar and dish soap will attract them, keep them out of your fruit, and win.

Fudge Day: June 16

06:20 AM | -
Fudge Day is the holiday for fudge lovers (so basically all of us, or nearly all of us). The earliest written account of fudge is noted in 1886 and found in a letter written by Emelyn Hartridge. A student of Vassar College, she wrote about the fudge her cousin made and sold for 40 cents a pound. She obtained a copy of the recipe and produced 30 pounds for the senior auction at the college.

Ganga Dussehra (H): June 5

06:20 AM | -
Ganga Dussehra is a day of devotion and faith celebrated in the month of Jyeshtha in the Hindu calendar. When the evening of Ganga Dussehra descends, devotees begin offering leaf boats with candles, sweets, and flowers to the river. The pilgrims seem mesmerized by the shlokas, bhajans, kirtans, and bells. It is an enchanting spectacle for people seeing this ritual for the first time. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

Gardening, Weed Your Garden Day: June 13

06:20 AM | -
Weed Your Garden Day encourages people to weed their gardens rather than use chemicals to deter weeds. Weeding increases the nutrients plants can get from the soil and adds to the garden's aesthetic appeal.
