The Fourth of July marks the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by the colonies of America from England. The American Revolution, fought by 13 colonies against Great Britain, followed the declaration. The war occured between 1776 to 1783, though skirmishes began as early as 1773. At the time, Great Britain was the world's super power, and the United States was a belligerent colony. The war began July 2, 1776, when the Continental Congress voted for independence. The declaration occurred two days later, on July 4, 1776. Most people do not realize that the Revolutionary War only involved 15% of American citizens on both sides. It does not take a lot of people to change history. It just takes a revolutionary idea and enough people to make it happen. Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence. The Fourth of July became an official federal holiday in 1941. Still, it was celebrated long before that, beginning in the 18th century. The Fourth of July is one of seven national holidays in the United States that most people have off. The others are New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Wife Carrying Championships, Intl. (FI): July 4-5 (est)

The Wife Carrying World Championship in Finland has been held each year since 1991. The event is organized through volunteers from nearby village associations, entrepreneurs and seniors and youth living in Sonkajärvi. It is as the name describes: men carrying women on their backs compete in a series of relay endurance tests to determine the World Champion. It is as difficult to do as it is fun to watch. The event has been picked up in other countries as well including the United States and United Kingdom, each which hold their own competitions. The Wife Carrying World Championship is the brainchild of Mr. Eero Pitkänen, of the Sonkajärvi municipality. Decisions on the event are made via the Sonkajärven Eukonkanto corporation committee consisting of public servants within the Sonkajärvi municipality, deputies from nearby companies & associations, and private persons living in Sonkajärvi. PLEASE NOTE: All televised and venue specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) should be treated as estimated, even if the dates are set. Several factors can cause an event to change dates at the last minute including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promoter prior to committing resources. In many cases we must estimate the dates based upon previous years' schedules, as the final dates are not set until a few months or weeks prior to the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Ashura marks the Shi'a Islamic new year. "Ashura" is the Arabic word for tenth, thus named as it occurs on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. Ashura is significant to the Shi'a Muslims. It marks the death of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala on October 12, 680 AD. The Islamic calendar follows the moon; therefore, the actual day of the Ashura occurs approximately 11 days earlier each year. Bikini Day (1946): July 5

Today is the anniversary of the aquatic clothing style that has enchanted men and terrified women into dieting for nearly five generations. The term "bikini" was coined by French automotive engineer Louis Réard in 1946 after the Bikini Atoll, a site in the Pacific used to test atomic bombs. He believed his two-piece swimwear would create an "explosive" cultural reaction akin to an atomic bomb. Réard's design was not the first two-piece swimsuit. Archaeological evidence, including Roman mosaics, show women wearing two-piece garments during athletic events as early as 300 AD. Swimming as a leisure activity didn't catch on until the nineteenth century. In 1837, London opened its first public swimming pool, and the Metropolitan Swimming Clubs of London, established in the 1860s, held regular swimming competitions. Though now considered recreation, swimwear followed current fashions with modesty as a requirement. Following World War I, swimsuits, like fashion, became less conservative. By the early 1940s, two-piece bathing suits were available, but they still covered the navel and a woman's posterior. Réard's bikini, introduced in Paris on July 5, 1946, was a radically streamlined design. It was so small that Réard claimed it wasn't a genuine bikini unless you could pull it through a wedding ring. Despite its initial controversy due to its revealing design, the bikini gained broad acceptance by the 1950s and 1960s, particularly in films, with celebrities, and in fashion magazines. The 1960s saw the rise of the "Monokini," a topless swimsuit designed by Rudi Gernreich, and later, the "Microkini," an even more revealing style. While these styles did not gain the same level of popularity as the bikini, they represented the ongoing trend toward more revealing swimwear. By the 21st century, the bikini became a multi-billion-dollar industry. It remains a staple of beachwear fashion in many parts of the world, and its influence extends beyond swimwear, influencing lingerie, activewear, and even general fashion trends.

A cooperative is a farm, business, or other organization owned and run jointly by its members. All take part in the running of the enterprise, and all share the costs and benefits. Especially in the developing world, cooperatives have provided a means for those with few assets and income to come together and create a company. In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed, in its resolution 47/90 of 16 December 1992, the International Day of Cooperatives to be celebrated annually on the first Saturday of July. International Day aims to: 1) Increase awareness of cooperatives; 2) Highlight the complementary goals and objectives of the United Nations and the international cooperative movement; 3) Underscore the contribution of the movement to the resolution of the major problems addressed by the United Nations; 4) Strengthen and extend partnerships between the international cooperative movement and other actors at local, national, and international levels, including governments.

Graham Cracker Day marks the anniversary of the birth of their inventor, Minister Sylvester Graham, on July 5, 1794. Graham crackers arrived early in the 19th century, and they aimed to promote a vegetarian lifestyle free of sin and combat masturbation. Yes, you read that right. Minister Graham believed that self-pleasuring was sinful and required a cure. He recommended switching to a vegetarian diet and eating whole wheat, bran, and wheat germ crackers to mitigate sexual desire. His followers, "Grahamites," initiated the first sexually abstinent vegetarian movement in the United States that abstained from meat, spices, and sexual activity. Grahamites believed sexual activity and eating meat leads to insanity and blindness. The movement eventually became extinct, but the graham cracker remains, and thank heaven for that. Where would cheesecake be without its graham cracker crust? Or S'mores?
