Childhood Obesity Week (UK): July 7-13

06:20 AM | -
Childhood Obesity Week in the UK seeks to encourage children to play outside and eat better. According to a 2016 report by the British Government: Today nearly a third of children aged 2 to 15 are overweight or obese, and younger generations are becoming obese at earlier ages and staying obese for longer. Reducing obesity levels will save lives as obesity doubles the risk of dying prematurely. Obese adults are seven times more likely to become a type 2 diabetic than adults of a healthy weight which may cause blindness or limb amputation. And not only are obese people more likely to get physical health conditions like heart disease, but they are also more likely to be living with conditions like depression. The economic costs are great, too. We spend more each year on the treatment of obesity and diabetes than we do on the police, fire service, and judicial system combined. The NHS in England spends approximately £5.1 billion on overweight and obesity-related each year. ___________ This month, parents, educators, and communities are encouraged to be involved and create solutions for child obesity. Parents are encouraged to be more active, and schools and administrators should also provide healthier food options. Chocolate Day, World: July 7

06:20 AM | -
World Chocolate Day is one of three significant days to celebrate chocolate. Chocolate beans have been used since around 1900 BC by the people of Central America, usually as a bitter drink, often alcoholic, or with red peppers. Tip: If you've never tried hot chocolate with red peppers using hot water instead of milk, it is quite a treat! It would take Christopher Columbus, on his fourth voyage, to bring this delicious bean to Europe. He noted the encounter in his ship's log on August 15, 1502. A few decades later, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés would bring the bean back in bulk (he was only 17 when Columbus found it). But in its Central American form, it wasn't the sweet treat we see today. That required several inventions, including: 1) John Baker's process of grounding between millstones cocoa beans to create a powder in 1764. 2) Conrad Van Houten developed a method for extracting the cacao liquor from the fat in the cocoa bean in 1828, which made chocolate affordable. 3) Finally, Swiss chocolatier Rodolphe Lindt developed conching in 1879. The rest is sweet history. There are several different types of cocoa beans. Though native to the Americas, nearly two-thirds of cocoa production today occurs in Africa. The Ivory Coast is the largest producer.

Global Forgiveness Day is about seeking the commonalities of our human experience and forgiving the inevitable trespasses and differences. Unresolved conflicts pepper our world, internationally, locally, and within our homes. Confrontation often leads to violence, and this day seeks constructive solutions absent misunderstanding, wasted time, energy, and resources. Living a life free of grudges is a happier and healthier life. Sponsored by The Christian Embassy of Christ's Ambassadors (CECA).

Injury Prevention Day, Ntl.(CA): July 7

06:20 AM | -
If you find yourself cruising around Canada on National Injury Prevention Day (created in 2017), you might notice a lot of green. Green waterfalls, green bridges, green landmarks, and green buildings. It's not a leftover of St. Patrick's day or a shout-out to an Islamic holiday. The green is an awareness campaign by Parachute to raise the visibility of the importance of injury prevention across the country. It is also the day Parachute releases its annual report on the previous year's Costs of Injury to the nation.

Kiswahili Language Day, World: July 7

06:20 AM | -
In the 1950s, the United Nations established the Kiswahili language unit of United Nations Radio. Today, Kiswahili is the only African language within the Directorate of Global Communications at the United Nations. The UN General Assembly, through its resolution 71/328 of 11 September 2017, advocated for a day dedicated to each of its official languages to promote awareness of their history, culture, and use. The resolution also encouraged the expansion of this initiative to other non-official languages spoken globally. In response, the 41st session of the General Conference of UNESCO adopted resolution 41 C/61, which recognized the role of the Kiswahili language in promoting cultural diversity, fostering dialogue among civilizations, and advancing multilingualism as a core value of the UN. As such, UNESCO proclaimed 7 July each year as World Kiswahili Language Day, making Kiswahili the first African language to be recognized in such a manner by the UN. Kiswahili, a Bantu language, is one of the most widely spoken African languages, with over 200 million speakers and more than a dozen main dialects. It is a common form of communication in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, bridging both past and present.

Employees, suppliers, and organizations of the United Kingdom's beloved National Health Service set aside one day a year to celebrate their accomplishments and find ways to reduce waste and increase the sustainability of the service. Suggestions include: Have a cycle to-work day! Cut meat from the staff or patient menus for a day! Encourage staff to walk or cycle to work and leave the car at home! Plant a tree! Reduce paper usage across the organization! Host a recycling scheme! Run a ward v ward competition on who can save the most energy! The day is about looking toward the future and keeping the NHS cost-efficient, healthy and productive.
