National Tattoo Day celebrates the ancient skin art of tattooing, the people who wear them, and the artists who create them. Tattooing has existed for thousands of years and is present in ancient cultures worldwide, including Egyptian, Polynesian, the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The oldest known tattoo dates between 3300 and 3100 BC. Attitudes about tattoos fluctuate throughout history. Currently, they are admired and coveted. At other times, they are shunned and seen as the sign of an outcast. Some tattoos have a religious significance, and others mark rights of passage. In war, tattoos mark a conquest or create a permanent mask, and in the 20th century, tattoos found favor as permanent makeup. Whatever the reason, one cannot help but admire the artistry of many tattoos. Today is your day to celebrate tattoos, or if they're not your thing, appreciate this ancient art.

Wrong Way Corrigan Day (1938): July 17

Wrong-Way Corrigan Day celebrates the anniversary of the New York to Dublin flight by Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan. On July 17, 1938, Corrigan tricked the US Government authorities. They insisted he could not fly to Dublin in his nine-year-old plane because it was too old. Not to be deterred, Corrigan filed an alternate flight plan to fly west across the US to Long Beach, California. The government was quite surprised when he landed in Dublin 28 hours and 13 minutes after takeoff. Corrigan became an instant American and Irish folk hero by successfully hoodwinking the US government. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) did not exist in 1938. It was created on August 23, 1958.

Yellow Pigs Day: July 17

Rest easy. This event has nothing to do with food and is kosher, halal, vegetarian, and vegan friendly. This little piggy does mathematics. Yellow Pigs Day is an annual celebration associated primarily with the Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics. The program is a summer math camp for high school students from all over the world who love math and want to learn more in a less austere and calculated manner. Their "secret symbol" the yellow pig with the number 17 printed on it, goes back to the 1970s. Not only is Yellow Pigs Day an excuse to bring together alumni, but it is also a celebration of the number 17. Why yellow pigs? That isn't explained. However, everything on campus and in the classroom has to do with the prime number 17, and yellow pigs are everywhere. Yellow Pigs Day is celebrated worldwide and now includes its own songs, traditions and general clowning around that has been adopted by programs including Mathcamp, PROMYS, MIT, the University of Chicago, and even Stanford. Caviar Day, Ntl.: July 18

Caviar is a food immediately associated with luxury and exquisite taste. First developed in Persia (Iran), the salted delicacy of sturgeon fish eggs (only sturgeon eggs can be caviar) gained popularity with the Czars of Russia in the 12th century. By the 1500s, the nobility of Europe took to the delicacy. Sensing an opportunity, Russians began importing the luxury item in the mid-nineteenth century. The sought-after garnish catapulted to popularity when Henry Schacht opened the first caviar business in the US using Delaware River sturgeon rather than Caspian Sea sturgeon. The United States quickly ascended to the number two producer of caviar in the world. Bartenders would even offer it free, as its saltiness made people drink more. Free caviar came to a dramatic halt in 1910 when the North American sturgeon was nearly extinct due to overfishing. Suddenly the salty bartender's primer became a costly luxury item and a mark of status in the United States. Several decades later, Iranian and Russian caviar faced a similar fate. In 1988, due to pollution and over-fishing, Caspian sturgeon found themselves on the endangered species list. Currently, affordable caviar is farm-raised in the US, Russia, Iran, and elsewhere. Wild caviar from the Caspian Sea maintains a premium, whether from Russia or Iran. Today is the day to tip your toast to the little fish egg garnish considered culinary gold and the lessons learned from the near extinction of the sturgeon due to greed.
