Cupcakes (or pupcakes) are baked, handed out, and sold along with information about the work of the RSPCA and the animals it saves. It’s a tasty way to support animal rights, respect life and help make the world a little more loving and friendly, one cupcake at a time.

The Australian Dental Association champions Dental Health Week. The week is its major annual oral health promotion aiming to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining whole mouth health. 65% of Australians haven’t seen a dentist in the last two years. 50% of Australians brush their teeth only once a day. Nearly 40% never floss nor clean between their teeth. 73% of young people (14-18 years) consume too much sugar. Dental Health Week promotes these key messages: Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Clean in between teeth at least once a day with floss or an interdental brush. Eat a healthy balanced diet and limit sugar intake. Regularly visit the dentist for check-ups and preventive treatment.

Digestive Tract Paralysis Awareness Month: August

One in 25 American families fight against Digestive Tract Paralysis daily. G-PACT supports these American families who fight against Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction (paralysis of the entire digestive tract), Gastroparesis (paralysis of the stomach), and Colonic Inertia (paralysis of the colon) daily. Digestive Tract Paralysis occurs idiopathically (without a known cause) or as a result of a virus (such as an aftereffect of the Chicken Pox virus). It can also be the result of several significant chronic illnesses. These include Diabetes, Dysautonomia, Parkinson's Disease, Lupus, Scleroderma, Cancer, Mitochondrial Disease, Spinal Cord Paralysis, and Cystic Fibrosis. G-PACT is leading the fight against Digestive Tract Paralysis by pursuing various treatment options through multiple outlets. In 2009, G-PACT established August as Digestive Tract Paralysis Awareness Month to encompass our founding date, August 23, 2001. This month has become recognized nationally and internationally as the official month to recognize and increase awareness of these conditions.

Internationally, it describes people with jobs that allow work anywhere with an internet connection. Most are either self-employed or in positions that allow for remote work. This event is not about international digital nomads. Digital Nomad Day is specifically about the vehicle-living nomads in the United States, some of whom have money and luxury RVs. A large percentage in this lifestyle do not. Digital Nomad Day began in 2019.

As with many things, learning about National Disc Golf Day introduced us at LEEP to something new that we knew nothing about. Disc golf is played like golf. Rather than a ball and clubs, players use a disc or Frisbee®. The sport began in the 1970s. Like golf, the game's object is to complete each hole in the fewest strokes (disc throws). Disc Golf takes Frisbees to new heights. However, you might want to leave your dog home for this sport! Happy National Golf Disc Day!

National Dog Day is set aside in honor of man's best friend, the dog. The date is the anniversary of Ms. Paige's father adopting their first dog, Sheltie, on August 26, 1980. This celebration also brings to light the plight of rescue dogs. People adopt dogs from shelters and rescue homes, while others bring dogs to dog spas for pampering. Paige's foundation created 17 pet holidays to promote pet adoption, including National Holistic Pet Care Day, National Dog Day, and National Dress Up Your Pet Day.

How do you know the silly season has arrived? It's time for the World Dog Surfing Championships in California, USA. The 'silly season' is what journalists use to describe late July through Labor Day, a time when so many people are on vacation that whimsical stories make it into the forward pages and local news broadcasts. Dog surfing originated in Northern California and has spread to other nations with surf cultures. The most popular and well-known dog surfing event is the World Dog Surfing Championships, which takes place in Pacifica, California. This event began in 2006 and has since attracted participants and spectators from all over the globe. In addition to the main surfing competition, the event often includes other activities like a dog fashion show, dog-friendly beach activities, and opportunities for dog adoption. Dogs of all breeds, sizes, and skill levels can participate in these events. They are usually categorized based on size (small, medium, large, and extra-large) to ensure fair competition. Scoring in the match typically follows similar criteria as in human surfing, such as the length of the ride, wave difficulty, and the dog's style and confidence on the board. Dog surfing events provide entertainment and friendly competition for the participants and serve as fundraisers for local animal shelters, rescue organizations, or other dog-related causes. The competition has become a successful charity fundraiser and a favorite event with dog lovers everywhere. Created by expert seamstress and entrepreneur Lanetta Sprott of Texas in 2011, National Doll Day is a celebration of dolls and all things related to dolls. The first Sunday of August hosts the event as it is also World Friendship Day. For many children, dolls are often their first best friend. World Friendship Day is a holiday proposed by Hallmark Cards after WWI and later became a national holiday in the US by Congressional Decree in the 1930s. The word "world" was added when the UN inaugurated Winnie-the-Pooh as the official Ambassador of Friendship. Dolls could well be the oldest toy we still play with today. The oldest doll was discovered in an Egyptian tomb 23 centuries ago, in 210 BC. Doll collecting is big business. According to the website "Most Luxurious List," the most expensive doll ever purchased is L'Oiseleur, which sold for $6.25 million. The second is by Madame Alexander, Eloise, which sold for $5 Million. In 2014 the Kämmer & Reinhardt character doll created between 1909 and 1912 sold at auction during 2014 for $395,750. It is believed to be the only one ever made. The most extensive doll collection (outside of the Small World Ride at Disneyland) is owned by Bettina Dorfmann of Dusseldorf, Germany. By 2012 her collection included 15,000 Barbie dolls with an estimated value of over $1.4 million.
