Phenylketonuria (PKU) Awareness Day, Intl.: June 28

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited metabolic disorder. Children born with it cannot process the amino acid phenylalanine. This results in mental disabilities and neurological issues including memory loss and mood disorders, if left untreated after birth. Special medical foods are required by children and adults living with PKU. There is no cure for PKU. In order to avoid irreversible brain damage, patients eat special diets, take medication and restrict the amount of phenylalanine in their diet. International Phenylketonuria Awareness Day was first held in 2013, and seeks to raise awareness about this disease and raise funds for treatment and a possible cure.

The origin of picnicking is aristocratic, and these outdoor banquets were popular social events for the elite during the Renaissance and Medieval times. The year 1692 is the first time the word picnic appeared in print, in French. Today, picnics are outdoor parties for two or more people.

Pied Piper Day (1284): June 26

On Pied Piper Day, people celebrate the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, or (Rattenfänger von Hameln in German). The legend is based on a possibly true story. During the 13th and 14th centuries, bubonic plague haunted Europe, and its source was rats. As a rat-Catcher in Hamelin, his services would have been in great demand. The word 'pied' means multi-colored clothing, and this particular rat-catcher is said to have lured rats from their hiding places with music from his pipe, a simple wind instrument that looks like a flute. Of course, if people refused to pay him, he then used the music from his magical pipe to lure the town's children away. It is believed 130 children disappeared on this day in 1284 AD. The city of Hameln is visited by thousands of people daily during the summer months, with the Pied Piper being the reason. In 2013 the city officially requested UNESCO recognize the city and its Pied Piper as an "intangible cultural heritage." The legend endures in one form or another in the writings of Johan Wolfgang von Goethe, the Brothers Grimm, Robert Browning, Terry Pratchett, and others.

On National Pink Day, people wear the color pink, enjoy eating pink food, and donate to charities. The color pink first came to prominence in the 17th century and is described as a pale red color' The word pink derives from the Dianthus Flower with its 'pinked' petals. Pink was once an ordinary verb meaning "to decorate with a perforated pattern (pinking shears)." Specific color combinations that use pink symbolize moods. Combined with white or blue, pink denotes memories from childhood, femininity, and sensitivity. In recent years it has come to symbolize the transgender movement. When combined with black or purple, it represents seduction. Throughout the centuries, you'll find pink in fashion and religious artwork. However, until WWII, pink was considered masculine, and blue was feminine. Mamie Eisenhower, the first lady of the US during the 1950s, changed this. She loved the color, wore it, painted rooms, and surrounded herself with it. When movie star Jane Mansfield took up the pink torch, pink became the "in color" associated with women.

PinkPop (NL): June 19-21

PinkPop Festival began in 1970 and has been held annually in Landgraaf, Limburg, The Netherlands. It got its name from its original date on Pentecost Monday (which is called "Pinksteren" in Dutch). Today the festival occurs in June and spans three days. This festival has hosted many of the world's biggest music acts, including the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Bruce Springsteen, and Radiohead. Music played is a mix of pop, electronic, hip-hop, folk, rock—you name it. PinkPop hosts three stages. There's the Main Stage (the biggest one), the North Stage, and the Garden Stage, which is the smallest and has a more intimate vibe. They're all spaced out so that the sound doesn't overlap. The Dutch sure know how to have a good time. Attendees are relaxed, friendly, and excited about the music. Their spirit of camaraderie is infectious. The festival becomes a pop-up town for a weekend, with tens of thousands of festival-goers camping in the nearby fields. The camping experience is part of the fun, with people from all over the world sharing stories, drinks, and laughs. Food stalls and trucks offer traditional Dutch fries and pancakes to burgers and vegan options. PinkPop is one of those festivals that every music lover should experience at least once. It's more than just about the music. It's about the people, the location, and the incredible atmosphere.
