LET'S PLAY! INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PLAY The International Day of Play, annually on June 11, promotes the importance of play in the lives of children and adults. This day underscores the role of play in fostering physical, mental, and emotional well-being and advocates for the right of individuals, especially children, to engage in play. By highlighting the benefits of the game, the day aims to empower communities, schools, and families to prioritize and facilitate playful activities, fostering a commitment to the cause. In academic terms, play is a voluntary, intrinsically motivated activity that involves imagination, creativity, and often social interaction. Play is characterized by flexibility, spontaneity, and the absence of external goals or pressures. It can take various forms, including physical, social, constructive, and imaginative play, each contributing uniquely to development and learning. PLAY FOR CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT Play is crucial for children's healthy development. It promotes cognitive growth by enhancing problem-solving skills, creativity, and imagination. Socially, play helps children learn cooperation, negotiation, and conflict resolution. Physically, it aids in the development of motor skills and overall fitness. Emotionally, play provides a safe space for children to express their feelings and build resilience. PLAY FOR ADULTS Play is equally significant for adults. It reduces stress, boosts creativity, and improves overall mental health. Engaging in playful activities such as board games, sports, or creative hobbies can enhance problem-solving abilities and foster social connections. Adults who make time for play often report higher levels of happiness and fulfillment. The International Day of Play began with the International Play Association (IPA), an organization dedicated to promoting the child's right to play as recognized by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Pollinator Month, Ntl. (US/CA): June

National Pollinator Month began as a weekly event in the United States and Canada and expanded to an entire month as of 2020. If you grew up before the 1990s, you probably remember seeing a lot of bees and butterflies in the summer. They were everywhere; anywhere there were flowers. Take a walk around your neighborhood today, and more likely than not, you won't see a single bee or butterfly. Where did they all go? Over the past two decades, insecticides and other chemicals have drastically culled bees and pollinator populations. The reduction in pollinators is devastating to food production and biodiversity. Bees, butterflies, birds, and bats are essential to pollination; food won't grow without them. National Pollinator Month is your opportunity to learn about the effects of pesticides on nature's workers and a chance to make your home, school, or workplace pollinator friendly.

Pony Express Re-ride: June 15-25

The Pony Express Re-ride is a 10-day recreation of the 1,966-mile route of the 19th-century Pony Express, the old-school form of Federal Express. Riders carry mail from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California, the same way they did in April 1860 and October 1861. This 24-hour-a-day ten-day event is a fantastic treat for anyone along the path of the re-enactment of the historic ride. However, if you are in Missouri, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Nevada or California, you can see the Pony Express live as it passes through cities in these states.

Pop Goes the Weasel Day: June 14

National Pop Goes the Weasel Day commemorates the nursery rhyme "Pop Goes the Weasel." This nursery rhyme is around 400 years old and originated as a dance; lyrics were added later. By the 19th century, it evolved into a children's game. In 1961, Anthony Newly, a British singer, recorded a pop version of this rhyme, and it reached number 12 on the United Kingdom singles chart. Children sing the song while forming a ring with one player in the middle to play the game. The person in the middle is the weasel. The children rush to create new rings when the line "Pop goes the weasel" is said. The last person to join falls out of the game, which is repeated until only one player is left.

Post-Traumatic Stress Awareness (PTSD) Day, Ntl.: June 27

PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) Awareness Day began in 2010. In 2014 the US Congress made this a month-long event, with an awareness day on June 27. It has since gone worldwide. National Center for PTSD (NCPTSD) supports PTSD Month and encourages people to become aware of the signs of PTSD and provide effective treatments for the disease. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that manifests after exposure to a traumatic event, including rape, being forcibly separated from one's parents, war, crime victim, bullying, or domestic violence.

Pralines Day, Ntl.: June 24

Initially, pralines were created by adding almonds to boiling sugar. Today a praline can be in its original form or as a bonbon, chocolate candies filled with nuts, milk, or cream. Pugstock (UK): June 21

The Oregon version of the Pug Crawl in Portland may have disappeared from the Oregon Humane Society's event calendar, but the Brits have taken up the challenge.
