Denmark's eight-day Roskilde Festival began in 1971 when a couple of high school students, Mogens Sandfær and Jesper Switzer Møller, with promoter Carl Fischer, decided they needed a reason to party and hear great music. Over the years, the festival has grown exponentially in size and its cultural and societal impact. With over 100,000 attendees annually, it's one of Europe's biggest festivals driven by non-profit ideals. All profits from the festival go to social and cultural charities. What's it like? Picture a city of tents sprawling as far as you can see, filled with people from all walks of life gathered in one place to celebrate music, art, and community. The music is diverse, featuring international stars to local Scandinavian talent, and nearly every genre is represented, including punk, electronic, jazz, hip-hop, rock, and folk performances. The Art Zone is another feature highlighting the work of innovative and talented artists. The Science Pavilion presents exploration, talks, and workshops on sustainability and technology. It's a real fusion of different cultures and ideas. And then there is the food. Food stalls serve a wide range of cuisines that promote sustainability, including organic and vegan options. The Roskilde Festival is for anyone who loves music, arts, and a vibrant community atmosphere. It's more than a festival; it's an experience. Saint Erasmus (Elmo) Day (303AD): June 2

The patron saint of sailors and seamen, St. Erasmus, or as he's popularly known, St. Elmo, is believed to have been martyred on or near this day, June 2, 303 AD. WHY SO MANY FEAST DAYS? Have you ever noticed that there seem to be feast days for just about everything in the Catholic and Orthodox Christian faiths? There is a reason for that. The church granted feast days to allow all subjects of the Crown to take a day off. As most worked six days a week, feast days provided a break that landowners and nobility couldn't deny. If they tried, they were going against the church, and that you did not do. In medieval times, there were approximately 60 feast days a year. Add this to 52 Sundays, Christmas, and Easter; workers received at least 114 days off a year. Contrast that to today. The average American gets 104 weekend days and seven national holidays off work. That's three days less than the commoners of the Dark Ages, just in case you're feeling a little overworked.

Saint John (Jean) the Baptist Day: June 24

Saint Jean Baptiste Day (Feast of Saint John the Baptist) is a day to honor Saint John the Baptist, the man who baptized Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. The holiday is celebrated in the French Canadian provinces with open-air concerts, parades, and fireworks displays. Alternate names include language La Saint-Jean, Fête Nationale du Québec, St. John the Baptist Day, and Quebec's National Holiday. In Quebec, Saint Jean Baptiste Day is a public holiday, meaning that public offices are closed, and public transportation has a limited schedule. This day is a paid day off holiday if this date falls on a Sunday for workers who work that day. Like most festivals that fall in the Midsummer, Saint Jean Baptiste Day has its roots in the pre-Christianity times when the summer solstice is celebrated in Europe. When Europe converted to Christianity, pagan elements were incorporated into the celebrations introduced by French colonists in Canada. The first celebration of Saint Jean Baptiste Day occurred on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River with bonfires and munitions salutes using canons and muskets. Saint Jean Baptiste Day was first officially observed in 1843 after Ludger Duvernay decided to have an event similar to Montreal's St. Patrick's Day. That year, he established the Saint Jean Baptiste Society as the promotional tool for the celebration. With the backing of the Catholic Church, in 1880, the Saint Jean Baptiste Society formed the first Congrès National des Canadians Français during the festival, and the song "O Canada" was first performed. By 1908, Saint John the Baptist became the patron Saint of Quebec.

In the Hindu faith, Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha. Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) occurs on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (the dark lunar or waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan (the sight of the moon).
