World Sauntering Day encourages people to stop and smell the roses, that is, slow the pace of life and enjoy it. It is believed that World Sauntering Day started in the Grand Hotel in Mackinac, Michigan, in 1979, the hotel with the longest porch in the world. W.T. Rabe created the event as a response to the increasing popularity of joggers in the area to encourage appreciation of the world around us by taking things slow. World Sauntering Day is currently unsponsored.

Say Something Nice Day: June 1

Say Something Nice Day occurs June 1 each year as a response to bullying and a lack of courtesy in current society. This day is also for remembering special people in one’s life and apologizing to people one wronged in the past. Say Something Nice Day originated in Charleston, South Carolina. Inspired by the book “Say Something Nice: Be a Lifter at Work,” the Charleston and North Charleston mayors, together with some Baptist churches, created the National Say Something Nice Day in the hopes of kindness reciprocity.

National Homeownership Month is an annual event in the United States in June. It is designed to promote and celebrate homeownership's benefits and encourage more people to pursue the American Dream of owning their own homes. President Bill Clinton proclaimed a week in June 1995. In 2002, President George W. Bush expanded the observance to encompass the entire month of June. During National Homeownership Month, various government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private sector entities work together to raise awareness about the advantages of owning a home and the resources and programs available to help people achieve homeownership. Activities and events typically include educational workshops, seminars, and counseling services to provide prospective homebuyers with the information and tools they need to make informed decisions. Some of the key objectives of National Homeownership Month include the following: Educating the public about the benefits of homeownership, such as building equity, creating stability, and fostering a sense of community. Highlighting available resources, such as financial assistance programs, mortgage options, and homebuyer education courses, that can help make homeownership more attainable. Encouraging responsible homeownership by promoting sound financial management, sustainable housing, and informed decision-making. Addressing barriers to homeownership, including affordability issues, credit challenges, and lack of knowledge about the home-buying process. National Homeownership Month serves as a reminder of the importance of homeownership in the United States and its role in promoting economic growth, community development, and overall well-being.

Hristo Botev Day (BG)(1876): June 2

June 2, each year, from noon to 12:03 PM, the nation of Bulgaria sounds its air raid sirens to honor a national hero, Hristo Botev. The entire country comes to a stop. Botev was a 28-year-old poet and a patriot killed in battle against the Ottoman Empire at Stara Planina near Vratza. A national hero, he is honored each year on the anniversary of his death.

Humanist Day, World: June 21

The summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere is World Humanist Day. Sponsored by the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), this worldwide celebration brings awareness to the Humanist movement and its goal of creating a kinder, gentler world based upon mutual respect. This event was conceptualized in the 1980s by the American Humanist Association (AHA), though the dates differ depending on the chapters. It was during the early 1990s that both IHEU and AHA decided to settle for a specific date, June 21.

Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones are one of nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena. Their location determines which word describes it. Hurricane—storm in the Atlantic and northeastern Pacific Oceans near Japan and SE Asia. Typhoon—northwest Pacific Ocean. Cyclone—southern Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Iced Tea Day: June 10

Although iced tea was already known as early as the 18th century, its popularity rose when Richard Blechynden, a plantation owner, decided to replace his hot tea servings with cold ones during the St. Louis World Fair. This Fair would be the origin of at least two American favorites, iced tea, and the ice cream cone.

INTERNATIONAL IDOPATHIC HYPERSOMNIA AWARENESS WEEK® FOCUSING ON A RARE SLEEP DISORDER Idiopathic Hypersomnia Awareness Week (IHAW) is a global campaign designed to increase awareness of Idiopathic Hypersomnia. Idiopathic Hypersomnia is a sleep disorder in which the person afflicted feels chronically sleepy during the day and has difficulty waking. Idiopathic Hypersomnia is the less-known cousin of narcolepsy, a rare and chronic neurological sleep disorder that leaves those who suffer from it feeling perpetually exhausted—no matter how much they sleep. The term "idiopathic" means "of unknown cause," in this case, it underscores how much the disorder remains a mystery. Patients with idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) experience excessive daytime sleepiness that isn't relieved by naps or extended nighttime rest. Some may sleep more than 10 hours a night and still struggle to remain awake during the day. Others may find waking up challenging, often needing several alarms or even physical help to rise, a symptom known as "sleep inertia." Unlike sleep deprivation or conditions such as sleep apnea, IH does not result from poor sleep habits or interruptions during the night. The cause is unknown, though researchers suspect an abnormality in the brain impacting the sleep-wake cycles. Another theory examines the central nervous system's response to GABA, a neurotransmitter that induces sleepiness. There is no known trigger, and the disorder can appear without warning—often in adolescence or young adulthood. It affects both men and women. Living with IH can be profoundly isolating. Many patients report difficulties in maintaining employment, education, or social relationships. The constant sleepiness can impair memory, focus, and reaction time, making daily tasks daunting. Patients often describe it as "like walking through life in a fog." Treatment remains a challenge. Because the underlying cause is unknown, there is no cure—only symptom management. Doctors often prescribe wake-promoting medications like modafinil or amphetamines, with varying success. For some, these drugs provide temporary relief; for others, they do little to combat the relentless fatigue.

Introduced and passed in the US House of Representatives in 2020, Immigrant Heritage Month is a celebration of the accomplishments and contributions immigrants and their children have made in making the United States a healthier, safer, more diverse, and prosperous country and acknowledging their importance to the future. Unless you are a Native American or your ancestors were brought here against your will on slave ships, your family were immigrants at some time. As demographics have shifted over the past 120 years, various groups have organized to keep out or make immigration difficult for persons of color, non-protestant faiths, or of differing political beliefs. Under some administrations, they’ve succeeded. Yet, the United States would not be the United States without immigration and cannot continue without immigration. Celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month and celebrate what makes America unique.
