The James Beard Awards recognizes exceptional talent and achievement in the culinary arts, hospitality, media, and broader food system, as well as a demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity, community, sustainability, and a culture where all can thrive. Established in 1990, the James Beard Awards are among the nation’s most prestigious honors recognizing leaders in the culinary and food media industries. The Awards Committee oversees each awards program (Books, Broadcast Media, Journalism, Leadership, and Restaurant and Chef). Subcommittee members volunteer their time to manage the policies, procedures, and selection of judges for their respective programs. All James Beard Award winners receive a certificate and a medallion engraved with the James Beard Foundation Awards insignia.

Journalist, Columnists' Day, Ntl.: June 24*

Journalism is under attack globally and in the United States. Columnists are the people we turn to daily or weekly for information and opinion. They help us sift through data, consider facts and challenge perceived notions. Columnists' Day was created by Jim Six, a columnist with the Gloucester County Times and later South Jersey Times from 1984-2014. Six passed away in 2017, but his event continues in his honor and to honor the columnists who keep us entertained and informed. Always on the 4th Tuesday in June.

Juggler's Day, World (1947): June 20*

World Juggler’s Day occurs on the Saturday closest to June 17 each year. June 17, 1947, is the day the International Juggler’s Association (IJA) came into being. IJA is an organization consisting of jugglers who wish to have regular meetings and promote camaraderie and friendship. World Juggler’s Day honors juggling and the people who push boundaries to keep this skill alive. Today, people learn how to juggle or watch a professional juggler do his thing. World Juggler’s Day is one of two Juggling Days in the LEEP calendar. The day set aside for master multitaskers occurs in mid-April each year.

Juneteenth (1865): June 19

Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865, nearly two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in the United States. It is the day when the slaves of Galveston, Texas, finally learn of their release from slavery. A reading of the Emancipation Proclamation and the singing of traditional African American songs continue the public celebrations. Juneteenth is a national holiday in the United States.

Just One Day, Day (2001): June 11

Animal advocates spend June 11 each year supporting no-kill shelters, providing medical care, shots, and spaying or neutering for animals trapped at kill facilities. These animals would be dead were it not for Just One Day. Thousands of organizations in every state take part. Stanford Law graduate, former prosecutor, and attorney Nathan Winograd created Just One Dayon on June 11, 2001.

Law Enforcement Officers, Ntl. Day of Prayer for: June 19

National Day of Prayer for Law Enforcement was created in 2011 by the non-profit Wives Behind the Badge and occurs annually on the third Friday in June. The day's purpose is to ask that people pause for a moment to pray for the peacekeepers in their town and that they may return home safe each night.
