LGBTQ Equality Day marks several Supreme Court ruling anniversaries. June 26, 2003: Lawrence v. Texas States can no longer criminalize the private conduct in which same-sex couples engage. June 26, 2013: United States v. Windsor Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional. The Federal Government may longer restrict married same-sex couples from receiving Federal benefits and protections. June 26, 2015: Obergefell v. Hodges Same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry, and States can no longer discriminate against same-sex couples when recognizing or licensing a marriage.

Lightning Awareness Week, Ntl.: June 21-27

National Lightning Safety Awareness Week began in 2001 to call attention to this underrated killer. Since then, lightning fatalities in the United States have dropped from about 50 per year to about 30. This reduction in deaths is primarily due to greater awareness of the lightning danger and people seeking safety when thunderstorms threaten. During National Lightning Safety Awareness Week, people are encouraged to learn more about lightning and lightning safety.

Lightning Safety Day, Intl. (2011): June 28

International Lightning Safety Day was created in 2015 to mark the anniversary of the June 28, 2011, lightning strike that killed 19 people. On June 28, 2011, a lightning strike at Runyanya Primary School in western Uganda killed 18 students and their teacher, sparking concern among officials due to a recent spate of deadly lightning strikes in the country. The incident occurred around 1630 local time while students waited inside classrooms for a downpour to cease. The police reported that the victims included 15 girls and three boys, with another 36 students admitted to the hospital for injuries. The absence of lightning rods atop several buildings, including schools and health centers, is the believed cause of the high casualty rate. Uganda's Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness, Musa Ecweru, labeled the omission of lightning arrestors during construction as "negligent." He pledged to rectify the issue moving forward. Marx Kabi, a specialist at Uganda's National Forestry Authority (UNFA), highlighted another major cause of increased lightning strikes: deforestation. He noted that with fewer trees to absorb or channel lightning, most areas now covered by shrubs were more vulnerable to strikes. The incident brought the total lightning-related fatalities that week to 28.

National Little League Baseball Week began with President John F Kennedy in 1961 and is to occur on the beginning on the second Monday of June each year. The following is the presidential proclamation establishing this week. Proclamation 3407—National Little League Baseball Week April 18, 1961 By the President of the United States of America "Whereas active participation by youth in appropriate physical activities contributes to their fitness and to the maintenance of our national vigor and vitality; and Whereas Little Leagues in communities throughout the Nation have made it possible for thousands of young boys to take an active part in our national game of baseball; and Whereas Little League baseball not only promotes the physical well-being of the players, but also instills into them the qualities of fairness, cooperation, and discipline-qualities which contribute to the development of good citizenship; and Whereas the Congress, by House Concurrent Resolution 17, agreed to June 1, 1959, has requested the President to designate the week beginning the second Monday in June of each year as National Little League Baseball Week, in recognition of the national and community benefits resulting from Little League activity: Now, Therefore, I, John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate the week beginning the second Monday in June of 1961, and the week beginning the second Monday in June of each succeeding year, as National Little League Baseball Week. And I invite the people of the United States to observe that week in schools, parks, athletic fields, and other suitable places with appropriate ceremonies and activities designed to emphasize the importance of the physical development of our Nation's youth. Created in 2017, Loneliness Awareness Week in the United Kingdom focuses on the importance of building awareness about loneliness's impact on the people around us. Anyone can be lonely, and everyone feels lonely at some point, and the pandemic has exasperated the situation for many. This week is about reaching out to friends and neighbors and raising awareness about loneliness and its impact on quality of life, health, and the community. At LEEP, this has to be our favorite event champion name, "Marmalade Trust." How cute is that? And it is so fun to say!

Mabo Day (AU)(1992): June 3

Mabo Day marks the anniversary of the June 3, 1992 court ruling in Australia that affirmed native peoples held title to their land, regardless of how they chose to use it. This legal battle dates back to the 1780s and was finally spearheaded by Eddie Koiki Mabo, who sadly died five months before the ruling was announced. The Aboriginal Heritage Society explains it thus: Terra nullius (land belonging to no one) is the legal concept that Indigenous peoples did not own Australia and the Torres Strait Islands because they did not 'use' the land in ways Europeans believed constituted some legal possession, thus giving 'legitimacy' to the British colonial and Australian governments to allow the dispossession of all Indigenous peoples of their land. Whether an Aboriginal group lost its land to colonial settlement and invasion in 1788, 1880, or 1970, the argument was that they never owned it, never had an internationally recognizable legal entitlement to it, and therefore could be considered trespassers on Crown land and would not be able to claim any compensation for its loss. Koiki Mabo and his legal team fought hard to demonstrate that he and his people had traditional land ownership systems on Mer. The case went to the High Court. Unfortunately, Eddie Mabo died five months before the historic decision came on June 3, 1992, that 'native title' did exist, and it was up to the people of Mer to determine who owned the land. In 2002, Eddie's wife, Bonita Mabo, called for a national public holiday. Eddie and Bonita’s son, Eddie Mabo Jr. She said: "We believe that a public holiday would be fitting to honor and recognize the contribution to the High Court decision of not only my father and his co-plaintiffs, James Rice, Father Dave Passi, Sam Passi, and Celuia Salee, but also to acknowledge all Indigenous Australians who have empowered and inspired each other."

Mad Hatter Day (UK): June 10

Mad Hatter Day occurs on October 6 (10/6) each year in the US and June 10 (10/6) in the United Kingdom. The day is a hat tip to illustrator Jogn Tenniel's interpretation of the Mad Hatter in Louis Carrol's Alice Through the Looking Glass (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland). In his illustrations, the Mad Hatter always wears a hat with a slip of paper that says "In this style 10/6". In the United Kingdom, Mad Hatter Day is celebrated on June 10, as Europeans read dates differently than Americans, with the day first and the month second. Who's right? Who cares! Americans celebrate this day as a "Second April's Fool's Day" each October, and the Brits quietly disagree, preferring to celebrate in June.

Magna Carta Day (1215): June 15

June 15 marks the anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta in 1215 AD, and it is the cornerstone of modern legal contracts. The Magna Carta Libertatum is a charter agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, and forms the basis for Western civilization and property law and rights. First drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury to make peace between the unpopular King and a group of rebel barons, it promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown, to be implemented through a council of 25 barons. Neither side stood behind their commitments, and a war broke out. But two years later, when the war ended, a peace treaty was agreed upon, and the document was reintroduced and got the name Magna Carta. The charter became part of English political life and was renewed by each monarch.
