Kamika Ekadashi (H): July 21

In the Hindu religion, Ekadashi is a holy day, with two each month. Kamika Ekadashi is associated with Lord Krishna (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu). Hindus believe observers of Kamika Ekadashi will bypass reincarnation and go straight to heaven. The Tulsi plant (Holy basil) plays a significant role in this day's worship. Simply looking at the Tulsi on Kamika Ekadashi removes all sins, and touching it and praying to it is believed to remove any disease. No Pet Store Puppies Day: July 21

The ASPCA sponsors No Pet Store Puppies Day each year. From the event website: "Puppy mill cruelty is a national problem. Tens of thousands of breeding dogs spend their lives in puppy mills and large-scale commercial breeding operations where profit is prioritized over the dogs' well-being. Dogs in these facilities are housed in tiny, overcrowded cages in unsanitary conditions, without proper veterinary care or adequate access to food and water—and many live out their entire lives without ever experiencing human affection. Female breeding dogs are bred at every opportunity with little to no time between litters for their bodies to recover, produce as many puppies as possible, and generate more profit for the mills. Their offspring may suffer from behavior, congenital, and hereditary problems due to irresponsible breeding practices. Puppies are typically sold to pet shops as young as eight weeks. Since most pet store puppies come from puppy mills, this cruelty is perpetuated every time a puppy is purchased from a pet store." The ASPCA estimates there are 6,000 to 10,000 commercial breeding facilities in the United States.

Pain Week in Australia focuses on what you can do and safe methods of managing (and avoiding) pain. It also is the week Chronic Pain Australia conducts its annual National Pain Survey. The results of each year's study are released toward the end of the year.

Glioblastoma Awareness Day: July 22

Glioblastoma entered medical and scientific literature in the 1920s. It is the most common malignant (cancerous) brain tumor and accounts for 48% of diagnoses. Despite its devastating prognosis, only four drugs and one medical device are approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat it. Each year, over 13,000 new cases of glioblastoma are diagnosed in the United States. To raise awareness and promote research and cures, the US Senate passed Resolution 617 in 2020, designating July 22 as Glioblastoma Awareness Day. This event first ran in 2019.

National Penuche Fudge Day is a food holiday focusing on the penuche, a fudge variety native to New England. Penuche may have originated with Boston Bruins player Mark Penuche in 1924, a maple syrup lover. Some claim it is Mexican in origin as the word "penuche" derives from the Spanish word "panocha," or raw sugar. What makes penuche different from other styles of fudge? Brown instead of white sugar is used, and pecans are commonly included. With a caramel-like taste, penuche is sometimes called brown sugar fudge candy. Penuche can also be used as frosting.

Pi Approximation Day: July 22

Pi Approximation Day is a play on numbers: the seventh month of the year and the twenty-second day of that month. Math enthusiasts celebrate this day as the standard approximation of pi: twenty-two divided by seven. Pi Approximation Day began at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. Pi is the mathematical constant equivalent to the 3.14159 or the diameter ratio to a circle's circumference. Pi is an irrational number; thus, it cannot be a common fraction. Since the 18th century, the Greek letter 'π' has represented pi.

Ratcatcher's Day (1376): July 22

Ratcatcher's Day commemorates the disappearance of 130 children on July 22, 1376, in Hamelin, Germany, and has ties to the story of the Pied Piper through a poem. The Pied Piper of Hamelin (Rattenfänger von Hameln in German) was said to live during the 13th & 14th centuries; bubonic plague (The Black Death) haunted Europe, and its source was rats. As a ratcatcher in Hamelin, his services would have been in great demand. The word "pied" means multi-colored clothing, and this particular ratcatcher is said to have lured rats from their hiding places with music from his pipe, a simple wind instrument that looks like a flute. Of course, if people refused to pay him, he used the music from his magical flute to lure the town's children away. Lore stated that 130 children disappeared in 1284 AD. Or did they? In a poem by Robert Browning, the date of the children disappearing is July 22, 1376, 92 years later. Ratcatcher's Day marks the poem's date, and Pied Piper Day marks the Hamelin date of 1284. Both are on the calendar. The city of Hamelin is visited by thousands of people a day during the summer months, with the Pied Piper being the reason. In 2013 the city officially requested UNESCO recognize the city and its Pied Piper as intangible cultural heritage. The Pied Piper legend endures in one form or another in the writings of Johan Wolfgang von Goethe, the Brothers Grimm, Robert Browning, Terry Pratchett, and others. Spoonerism Day in the United Kingdom commemorates the birthday of the Father of spoonerisms, an amusing exchange of phonetic sounds in a sentence, phrase, or word. This communication tactic is the invention of Reverend William Archibald Spooner. Spooner was known to have a bad habit of speaking incorrectly and not in the correct order. Utoeya Massacre (NO)(2011): July 22

On July 22, 2011, Utoeya Massacre occurred. Carried out by Anders Behring Breivik, the sequential attacks targeted the children of the government and business elites, ultimately claiming 77 lives. There were two attacks. The first exploded in the governmental office area in Oslo, killing eight and injuring hundreds. The homemade bomb made of fertilizer and fuel oil was parked near the office of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. It was a diversion to corral first responders away from his prime target, the children. The second attack occurred two hours later at a summer camp on the island of Utoeya. Breivik, wearing a police uniform and showing falsified identification, opened fire, killing 68 children and staff and injuring 110 people. The 69th victim died in a hospital of injuries. On August 24, 2012, Breivik was sentenced to 21 years of preventive detention.
