Created in 2006, the Black Sea Jazz Festival continues to grow yearly in eclectic Batumi, Georgia. Batumi is known for several things: its wine, its varied architecture, its beaches, and its Jazz Festival. This four-day event attracts acts and people from around the world, with many concerts sold out months in advance. We first discovered this event on a trip to Batumi in 2015 and fell in love with the city, people, food, and weather. It was July, and the temperature averaged 80F/27C! Plus, it's affordable for a week's getaway in Eurasia.

The Newport Folk Festival first began in 1959. Its founder is George Wein, who also created the famed Newport Jazz Festival. Over the years, Newport Folk Festival has become an iconic event in the music world. It is the festival where Bob Dylan went electric in 1965, a historical moment that stirred controversy and dramatically altered the course of popular music. Fast forward to today, the festival is still known for its spirit of musical innovation and discovery. While the event's roots are in folk music, you'll find artists across genres, including country, blues, folk-rock, and indie folk, showcasing big names and emerging talent. The waterfront festival occurs at Fort Adams State Park with Narragansett Bay and sailboats drifting by as music fills the summer air. Each of the festival's four stages comes with its unique vibe. The Fort Stage is the main one, set against the backdrop of the bay. Then there's the Harbor Stage, which is a bit more intimate, perfect for more mellow performances. The Quad Stage is inside a building within the fort itself, while the Museum Stage, as the name suggests, is inside the Museum of Yachting. The Newport Folk Festival features an element of surprise. The festival often keeps a handful of slots secret until the last minute, which has led to surprise performances from big names like Mumford & Sons and Dolly Parton. The atmosphere is relaxed, and there's a real shared love for music. Food trucks and stalls supply sustenance from local seafood to gourmet burgers. Those craving a cold one gather in the beer garden. Tickets sell out months in advance, so this is an event you must plan to visit rather than show up.

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards generate awareness of and appreciation for comics, graphic novels, and related popular art forms, including participation in and support of public presentations, conventions, exhibits, museums, and other public outreach activities celebrating the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture. Named for acclaimed comics creator Will Eisner (March 16, 1917 - January 3, 2005), the awards were created in 1988 and highlight the best publications and creators in comics and graphic novels. WHO WAS WILL EISNER? Will Eisner (1917-2005) was an American cartoonist and writer and is considered one of the most influential figures in the world of comics. He is best known for creating the following works: "The Spirit" (1940-1952)—published as a weekly newspaper comic book insert. "A Contract with God" (1978)—a semi-autobiographical graphic novel set in a Bronx tenement during the 1930s. The textbook series "Will Eisner's Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative" (1985-2007). Additional works include "The Dreamer" (1986), "To the Heart of the Storm" (1991), "The Name of the Game" (2001), and "The Plot: The Secret Story of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" (2005). It expanded the Civil Rights Act of 1964, making discrimination based on race, religion, sex, and national origin illegal.
