Hariyali ( greenery) Teej (third day) is an important holiday for married Hindu women seeking marital bliss and the well-being of their husbands. Hariyali Teej is the 3rd day of the first fortnight in the Hindu month, Shravan (Sawan). It is a celebration of the earth's renewal after a very hot and dry summer. Goddess Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva, is also worshiped on this day. Legend has it that the Goddess Parvati once underwent a self-imposed penance to demonstrate her devotion to Lord Shiva and was born and reborn on earth 108 times before he took her as his wife. The day was "Teej of Shrawan Month" when Lord Shiva took her as his wife, then Devi Parvati promised every woman who invokes Parvati would experience marital bliss. Women dress up in colorful clothes, wear jewelry, apply mehandi, wear colorful bangles and fast the whole day. The Hariyali Teej celebration comprises dancing and singing. National Love is Kind Day seeks to create a global movement that assists women, and their children escape similar situations anywhere in the world. The day's name originates from the love passages in the bible: 1 Corinthians 13, 4-13. A portion of this beloved passage is below "Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its way; it is not irritable or resentful; It does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never ends. Sleepyhead Day might be called the revenge of the early risers, especially if you are not a morning person. It is celebrated in Finland yearly and pranks the family snoozer, the last person to get up. This person is doused with water or thrown into a lake or sea. Another Finnish strategy is to shave the left side of the sleepyhead's chest, but only if the family snoozer is a man. In the towns of Naantali and Hanko, it's a public event. A prominent member of each is thrown into the sea at precisely 7 A.M. The person's name is kept secret until the last minute. Approaching dunking hour, selected townspeople whisk him or her out of bed and into the drink. Splash! Good morning! The Sleepyhead Day tradition is rooted in the story of the Saints of Ephesus (the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus). Custom says that around 250 AD, the seven men fled to a cave fearing persecution of their Christian beliefs. Fervently praying for God's help, they fell asleep and woke up two centuries later.

Earth Enters Global Boiling Stage (2023): July 28

In response to devastating wildfires and record-breaking temperatures, on July 28, 2023, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a dire warning about the impact of climate change. Describing the current era as "global boiling," he emphasized the urgency of international action on climate adaptation, emission reduction, and financial commitment towards climate goals. Guterres spoke of tragedies already unfolding due to climate change, including losing children to monsoon rains, families fleeing wildfires, and workers succumbing to extreme heat. Stressing the need for climate action now, Guterres called on leaders, particularly those from the G20 nations responsible for 80% of global emissions, to step up their efforts. He pointed to upcoming international events, including the UN Climate Ambition Summit and COP28, as opportunities for pivotal change. The Secretary-General urged for the adoption of new national emissions targets, advocating for net-zero emissions by mid-century, an equitable transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, cessation of oil and gas expansion, and the phasing out of coal by 2040. He further condemned greenwashing and deceptive practices obstructing climate action, demanding real commitment from companies, cities, regions, financial institutions, and fossil fuel companies. With extreme weather becoming the norm, Guterres appealed for an increase in adaptation investment, especially in developing countries. He called on developed nations to double adaptation finance by 2025 and to ensure protection through early warning systems by 2027.

Milk Chocolate Day, Ntl.: July 28

National Milk Chocolate Day celebrates the sweet and creamy version of chocolate favored by children known as milk chocolate. Adults prefer darker chocolate, which is higher in cocoa with less sugar. All chocolate contains the mood-enhancing properties of theobromine and anandamide, which create a sense of bliss. Milk chocolate was first available as a drink, created by Jordan & Timaeus of Dresden, Germany, around 1845. Daniel Peter mixed powdered milk and dark chocolate in 1875 and created the first milk chocolate candy bar that year called "Gala Peter." Milk chocolate was further enhanced in the coming years by Henri Nestlé, who happened to be a friend of Peter. Based upon the success of Gala Peter, they went on to found Nestlé Foods. Conching, or the process of heating and grinding chocolate solids to make the consistency creamier and effortlessly blended, was developed by Rodolphe Lindt. Milton Hershey economized the whole process, resulting in mass-produced milk chocolate. And, of course, the men mentioned above became millionaires from their foray with cocoa. Lindt, Nestlé, and Hershey continue to be household chocolate names.
