International Mangrove Day raises awareness about a precious natural resource. Let me explain with a personal story. If you ever travel to Cinnamon Island in Sri Lanka, your tour guide will take you in a small skiff across the Koggala Lagoon to reach it. Before arriving at the island where cinnamon comes from, you'll slide into a long tunnel made of trees growing out of the water. The engine cuts and your world transforms, filled with the sounds of gently lapping water, bird calls, rustling reptiles, and buzzing insects shrouded in a cape of trees. For a minute or two, you drift through the mangrove tunnel, enchanted by sounds and gentle breeze. It's a magical experience unique to the ecosystem created by the mangrove tree. Mangroves grow near water throughout Asia and in the tropics. In 2015 UNESCO, seeking to preserve these precious natural resources, established International Mangrove Day. Then UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay explains: "Mangroves, located in tropical regions where land and sea meet, form unique ecosystems whose benefit for human beings, the environment, and biodiversity are considerable.[...] Yet today, the mangrove ecosystem is seriously threatened. It is estimated that global coverage of mangroves has been halved in 40 years, largely as a result of coastal development. [...] This International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is an invitation to renew our efforts to support the preservation of an ecosystem that is vital for our planet and its inhabitants."

Soma Nomaoi (JP): July 26-28

A celebration of culture and the past, Soma Nomaoi is an annual festival in Japan observed for over 1,000 years. The primary attraction is the Kachu Keiba. In essence, 1,000 warriors dressed in ancient costumes compete to obtain three flags on the field—another group of men in white challenges these warriors. The objective is to corral and catch the wild horses in the area. It is a spectacular experience for visitors and Japanese alike. Annually in Hibarigahara, Haramachi, Fukushima Prefecture. Bagpipe Appreciation Day: July 27

Bagpipe Appreciation Day honors the Highlands Scottish Bagpipe. A Scottish tradition, the bagpipe is used for several events, including announcing the start of a battle, births, weddings, and funerals. On this day, Scottish heritage groups hold bagpipe performances in their town squares or halls. Bagpipes originated in the Middle East in about 600BC. Though Asian in origin, this instrument is now symbolic of the Scottish Highlands. The bags are made from sheep or elk skin, and three pipes are connected to this air sack. Sound comes out when air is released by pressing them against the arm of the musician. A fourth pipe controls the pitch and the chords with nine holes.

Barbie-in-a-Blender Day, Ntl.: July 27

Barbie in a Blender Day officially ran between 2003 and 2009. It was a protest movement by college students worldwide under the moniker of Freeculture.org. The purpose of the event was to support free speech rights. The Barbie in a Blender project was inspired by a legal case involving a lawsuit filed by Mattel, the maker of Barbie dolls, against Utah-based artist Tom Forsythe. In 1999 Forsythe created a series of photographs titled “Food Chain Barbie,” portraying nude Barbies in suggestive poses among kitchen appliances. Mattel filed a lawsuit, claiming copyright infringement and demanding Forsythe stop selling prints. On June 30th, 2004, the case was settled. A federal judge ordered Mattel to pay Forsythe $1.8 million in legal fees and court costs, calling Mattel’s suit “frivolous” and “unreasonable.” The Forsythe case highlights the increasing challenges those who wish to comment on popular icons, symbols, or cornerstones of culture face, given that many are trademarks or copyrights of large corporations. “If you want to talk about the problems with society, all of the widely recognized figures are copyrighted,” says Nelson Pavlosky of Freeculture.org. “In the past, cultural icons belonged to everyone…[now] if you want to use a relevant character to critique society, you’ll get burned by companies who can silence you, not by winning in court, but by outspending you and forcing you to cave in or lose all your money.” Though no longer a sponsored event, the whimsical nature of the day and the importance of preserving free speech have forced a continued observance of the day by free speech advocates worldwide.
