On July 30, 1778, despite being in the height of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress unanimously voted to side with ten whistleblowers who had reported misconduct committed by the Continental Navy's Commander in Chief. Congress sanctioned the Commander and paid for the whistleblowers' defense against him, declaring: "That it is the duty of all persons in the service of the United States, as well as all other inhabitants thereof, to give the earliest information to Congress or any other proper authority of any misconduct, fraud, or misdemeanors." National Whistleblower Day recognizes the sacrifices and courage of whistleblowers and their enduring importance to the health and safety of our nation. It also marks the anniversary of adopting the National Whistleblower Law of 1778.

Established in 1971, the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival honors the life and works of Bix Beiderbecke, a world-renowned musician who died on August 6, 1931. Concerts are held in his hometown Davenport, Iowa featuring his works and compositions. Popularly known as “Bix Bash,” this event is sponsored by the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Society. The event gathers jazz artists from across the country.

Chili Dog Day, Ntl.: July 31

Chili Dog Day celebrates the combination of two American inventions: the hot dog and chili. You can't understand the Southwestern United States without understanding its affinity for chili. Chili is a Mexican-American invention. It is a mole-based stew developed during cattle drives between Northern Mexico and Montana during the western expansion in the US of the 19th century. Mole is a style of sauce from Mexico. Beans, one of the easiest to transport and inexpensive sources of protein, were the cowboys' main sustenance on the cattle trail. Often beans were all they had, so the cowboys mixed these with spices and chilies. Meat, usually beef, bison, or venison when available, was added, creating Chili con Carne. Today, people take great pride in their chili recipes. Chili appears on hamburgers, hotdogs, and nachos served in bread bowls or eaten alone. What chili is, is really up to the chef, as long as it has chilies of several varieties.

Earth Overshoot Day: July 24

Earth Overshoot Day marks when humanity has used more from nature than our planet can renew. It shows the deficit in natural resources, pollution versus our use, and destruction. Key contributors are industrialized fishing, over-harvesting forests, and carbon dioxide emissions. In short, people use more than the planet can replace, and the ecosystems can absorb. When the project began in 1980, the date was November 3, and it continues to fall back each year. The date of Earth Overshoot Day each year is announced a few weeks before it happens, and therefore we estimate the date to keep the event within the calendar. Created in 1991 in Chicago, Lollapalooza is an annual music festival that features an eclectic collection of popular music genres, including alternative rock, heavy metal, punk rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. The festival was created by Perry Farrell, the lead singer of the alternative rock band Jane's Addiction, in 1991 as a farewell tour for his band and has since evolved into a significant event, attracting thousands of music fans worldwide. Lollapalooza began as a touring festival, visiting multiple cities across the United States. However, it faced financial difficulties in the late 1990s and early 2000s, leading to its cancellation in 2004. The festival returned in 2005 as a weekend-long event in Grant Park, Chicago. Over the years, many notable acts have performed at Lollapalooza, such as Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, and countless others. Musikfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is one of the largest annual non-gated music festivals in the United States. Non-gated means FREE. For ten days in late July or August, Bethlehem fills with music from over a dozen stages featuring rock, jazz, country, folk, and more. Music is just the first course. "National Doghouse Repairs Month" was created by Heidi Richards Mooney. Being in the "dog house" is an American colloquialism men often use to describe a situation where they know they've done something they shouldn't have. Their partner, usually a wife or girlfriend, has banished the offending male from the house as punishment, leaving just the doghouse for sleep. Banishment typically includes not speaking to the offending male, passive-aggressive behavior, withholding affection, angry outbursts, and an uncomfortable home life for anywhere from an hour to weeks. National Doghouse Repairs Month is the month to avoid all that with a pre-emptive strike of kindness.
