Take Your Kids to the Golf Course Week is part of Family Golf Month, sponsored by the PGA of America in the United States and NGCOA in Canada. It's a chance for fathers and daughters to spend time together. Take Your Kids to the Golf Course Week is a grassroots effort (no pun intended) designed to get more girls and boys interested in golf. Golf courses throughout the country may choose to hold this week on any of the four weeks of July, typically near the 4th of July holiday. Many golf courses offer specials this week, including free clinics for girls. National Cow Appreciation Day is sponsored by Chick-fil-A, an American fast-food restaurant specializing in chicken-based dishes. Each year since 1995, to convince people to ‘Eat Mor Chikin,’ the restaurant chain devotes a day to ‘cow appreciation’ with contests, specials on food, and cow costumes. National Cow Appreciation Day continues to be one of the most successful marketing campaigns in history and is a much-beloved addition to the fast-food chain’s bottom line. It is a highly anticipated event for its customers each year. In 2015 the company moved Cow Appreciation Day from the second Friday to the second Tuesday in July. The Cow Appreciation Day menu runs from opening until 7 PM at Chick-Fil-A restaurants nationwide.

Milk Chocolate with Almonds Day, Ntl.: July 8

Combining chocolate with almonds has existed for more than two centuries. In 1742, the first cookbook to be published, "The Complete Housewife," contained a chocolate almond recipe. Milk chocolate was first available as a drink, created by Jordan & Timaeus of Dresden, Germany, around 1845. Daniel Peter mixed powdered milk and dark chocolate in 1875 and created the first milk chocolate candy bar that year called "Gala Peter." Milk chocolate was further enhanced in the coming years by Henri Nestlé, who happened to be a friend of Peter. Based upon the success of Gala Peter, they went on to found Nestlé Foods. Conching, or the process of heating and grinding chocolate solids to make the consistency creamier and effortlessly blended, was developed by Rodolphe Lindt. Milton Hershey economized the whole process, resulting in mass-produced milk chocolate. And, of course, the men mentioned above became millionaires from their foray with cocoa. Lindt, Nestlé, and Hershey continue to be household chocolate names. International Milk Chocolate with Almonds Day is sponsored by organizations, including the National Confections Associations.

Pen Power Day (1972): July 8

Pen Power or Power of the Pen Day honors those throughout history who have chosen to wield a pen, camera, paintbrush, or music rather than a sword in fighting for human rights, equality, and causes. The date marks the assassination anniversary of one of the Arab world's most respected writers and journalists of the mid-twentieth century, Ghassan Kanafani. Kanafani was born in British Mandate Palestine in 1936. At the age of twelve, he saw the creation of the state of Israel. His family fled the fighting to Lebanon, ultimately settling in Syria as refugees. He began working with the liberation movement during his teen years, advocating for human rights under the new Israeli government. The organization was known as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which would later become infamous for plane hijackings. Kanafani was not part of that wing. A prolific writer, he told the story of the Palestinian experience as a journalist, as the editor of Jordan's newspaper Al Ra'i and later as the editor of Lebanon's Al-Hurriya. Like many journalists, he was also a novelist. His 1962 novel "Men in the Sun" continues to be one of the most famous and quoted works of modern Arab literature. In 1966, a year before the Six-Day War, he published a novel on life in a Gaza refugee camp entitled "All That's Left for You." Additional titles include "Umm Sa'ad" (1969) and "Return to Haifa" (1970). Kanafani believed ideas and stories were more powerful than any other form of resistance. He became one of the most respected political thinkers of the Palestinian diaspora and the Arab world. He tirelessly advocated for Palestinian rights, fighting only with the pen, never with arms. On July 8, 1972, he and his seventeen-year-old niece got into his car outside his home. As he turned the ignition, the vehicle erupted into a fireball, killing both instantly. He was thirty-six. Years later, the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad admitted they planted the bomb. History is replete with people who have risked their lives to report, draw, photograph, and write hard truths and injustices. They are novelists, journalists, photographers, filmmakers, cartoonists, musicians, and artists who use their talent to communicate ideas and facts. Even today, in the Philippines, Mexico, Egypt, Palestine, China, Russia, Turkey, and other nations, writers, reporters, and activists are jailed, assassinated, and attacked for refusing to remain quiet. Power of the Pen Day celebrates the brave man and woman choosing the pen, camera, paintbrush, or instrument as their weapon in fighting for a cause, freedom, and independence.

Space Shuttle Final Flight (2011): July 8

Today is the anniversary of the final flight of the Space Shuttle. It was at 5:57 AM on July 8, 2011, that the Atlantis shuttle returned to Cape Canaveral, Florida, after 30 years of service. It all began on April 12, 1981, during the launch of the Columbia space shuttle. The final flight was memorable because this was also the 50th anniversary of the second American human spaceflight, Gus Grissom, on board Liberty Bell 7. One of the distinctive legacies of the shuttle is the construction of the International Space Station, the largest laboratory in Earth orbit. The shuttle was the primary carrier of the heavy payloads that made the International Space Station what it is today.
