Buddhist Lent (B) (Vassa): July 11- October 6

06:20 AM | -
Buddhist Lent marks the start of the Wan Khao Phansa, a period of three lunar months during which Buddhist monks return to their temples and sequester. It is a reenactment of the habits of The Buddha. He chose to stay closed in a temple during rainy seasons to preserve life by avoiding killing by stepping on an insect or a plant. Monks today spend this period studying, meditating, and teaching. They are allowed to briefly go outside the temple during the day and sleep in the same temple nightly. Banks close on the first day of Wan Khao Phansa in Buddhist countries, and alcohol is avoided.

Cheer Up the Lonely Day: July 11

06:20 AM | -
Cheer Up the Lonely Day focuses on those we don't see, including the elderly and people with illnesses or mental issues. It's a day to give back and spend time with others. Some familiar places to find lonely people include retirement homes, homeless shelters, hospitals, and prisons. Check with your local institutions to see if they plan any specific programs for this day. Several countries have match programs for families looking for older adults and older people looking for families. These include: Adopt a Grandma in the United Kingdom: www.adopt-a-grandma.co.uk. Find a Grandparent in Australia: findagrandparent.org.au. Central Michigan University's Adopt-a-Grandparent program: http://www.cm-life.com/article/2015/03/adopt-a-grandparent Many faith-based organizations in the US have similar programs on a local level. Big Sisters/Big Brothers Program pairs at-risk youth with same-sex adults in the United States. Cheer Up the Lonely Day was created by Francis Pesek of Detroit, Michigan, and is celebrated on his birthday, July 11th. His daughter, LJ Pesek, continues the tradition.

Collector Car Appreciation Day: July 11

06:20 AM | -
Collector Car Appreciation Day (CCAD) aims to raise awareness of the importance of restoring cars and their role in American history. Today, many events are happening throughout the country, including classic car cruises and car shows. Since 2010, a U.S. Senate Resolution requested by the SEMA Action Network (SAN) has marked the second Friday of July as CCAD. This event celebrates the preservation of historic, classic, and specialty cars in the United States. Enthusiasts nationwide are encouraged to show their support by attending or hosting events such as car shows, cruises, or simply driving their unique vehicle to work.

Mojito Day, Ntl.: July 7

06:20 AM | -
Rum, sugar, soda water, lime, and crushed mint, are the essential ingredients of the mojito, one of the summer's favorite cocktails. The drink originated in Havana, Cuba, though when is disputed. Was it in the 1500s as a cure for scurvy or later, when cocktails became commonplace in the early 20th century? Whatever the origin, the mojito has earned its place among the top cocktails of all time. Cheers!

Paper Bag Day, Intl. (1871): July 11

06:20 AM | -
Imagine life without the paper bag. We use them for lunch, insulation, doggy bags, and airline nausea reduction receptacles. They carry groceries, provide easy gift wrapping, hold fried or popped food, and can even calm us down when we're hyperventilating. They are a fantastic invention first created by Francis Wolle on August 16, 1852, and perfected by Margaret E. Knight with U.S. Patent 116,842 (Improvement in Paper-Bag Machines, July 11, 1871.) July 11 is the anniversary of the square bottom paper bag used worldwide and is, therefore, International Paper Bag Day. It is also a celebration of female inventors, of which Ms. Knight excelled.

Population Day, World (1987): July 11

06:20 AM | -
World Population Day is a United Nations observance that raises awareness of the world's population and its impact on living, the world, and the environment. Sponsored and approved by the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) in 1989, July 11 was chosen as the date to focus on the issues in the overall plans for development and solutions to the rising world population. This date marks the anniversary of the "Day of the Five Billion," on July 11, 1987. Between 1987 and 2011, the world's population increased by 40%, reaching seven billion on Halloween 2011. In late 2022 or early 2023, the world's population will reach 8 billion, with the fastest growth happening in Africa and Asia. Due to the higher than average growth rates in these two regions, Islam is expected to surpass Christianity as the world's most populous religion in 2050. With explosive population growth, global culture in the next several centuries is expected to move from a European and Western focus to Eastern and Asian. How has the population grown? In 33AD, the year Jesus Christ died, the worldwide population was estimated between 150 and 330 million, roughly the population of the United States. It would take 1600 years for that number to double to 603 million. Near 1820, the world hit one billion people, approximately the population of India today. That number would double in 110 years, hitting 2.7 billion in 1930. Fifty-seven years later, it doubled again to five billion in 1987 and will double again in fewer than 73 years (2060) to 10 billion. Source: United Nations.

Snoopy's Senior World Hockey Tournament (US-CA): July 18-27

06:20 AM | -
Each summer, Snoopy's home ice rink in Santa Rosa, California, welcomes senior hockey players from across the globe to the Snoopy's Senior World Hockey Tournament. Initially organized in 1975 by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, the creator of "Peanuts," this tournament is an annual tradition.

Srebrenica Genocide, International Day of Reflection for (1995): July 11

06:20 AM | -
UN General Assembly Declares July 11 as International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of Srebrenica Genocide On Thursday, May 23, 2024, the UN General Assembly designated July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of Genocide Jully 11-19, 1995, in Srebrenica, Yugoslavia (Bosnia). At least 8,372 people were killed, thousands displaced, and entire communities destroyed. The resolution, adopted with the same title, also requested the Secretary-General to establish an outreach program on the Srebrenica genocide in preparation for the 30th anniversary next year. In addition, the Assembly condemned any denial of the Srebrenica genocide and called on Member States to preserve the facts through educational systems, aiming to prevent denial, distortion, and future occurrences of genocide. The resolution, sponsored by Germany and Rwanda, was adopted by a recorded vote of 84 nations in favor, 19 against, and 68 abstentions. THE SREBRENICA GENOCIDE The Srebrenica genocide represents one of the darkest chapters of the war that followed the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. In July 1995, the Bosnian Serb army overran Srebrenica, a town declared a safe area by the Security Council and brutally murdered thousands of men and teenagers. The Bosnian Serb forces also expelled 20,000 people from the city. A small and lightly armed unit of Dutch peacekeepers under the UN flag was unable to resist the Bosnian Serb forces. The brutal killings of Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica by the army of Republika Srpska have been recognized as genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). GLOBAL REACTION TO THE NEW DAY Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, welcomed the resolution as "further recognition" of the victims and survivors and their pursuit of justice, truth, and guarantees of non-recurrence. "The resolution is all the more important given the persistent revisionism, denial of the Srebrenica genocide, and hate speech by high-level political leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in neighboring countries," Türk stated. GERMANY: Antje Leendertse, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Germany to the UN, stated that the initiative was about honoring the victims and supporting survivors "who continue to live with scars of that fateful time." Leendertse clarified that the resolution "is not directed against anybody" but is aimed at the perpetrators of the genocide. SERBIA: President Aleksandar Vučić of Serbia criticized the resolution as "highly politicized," claiming it would "open a Pandora's box." "This is not about reconciliation, not about memories; this is something that will just open an old wound and create complete political havoc. Not only in our region but even here, in this hall," he argued. The commemoration of the day and remembrance of the event was established during the week leaders in Israel and Palestine's Gaza Strip were issued memorandum of intent to secure arrest warrants by the ICC for the unfolding genocide in Gaza, which has displaced 2.3 million people, killed over 35,000 and destroyed 80% of all housing, infrastructure and culture in a besieged area the size of the island of Manhattan in New York City. Like Serbia, those accused deny they're guilty of anything.

Bagelfest, Mattoon (US-IL) : July 12-19 (est)

06:20 AM | -
Bagelfest is a Lender's Bagel Company promotion, now under Pinnacle Foods. It began in 1986. Later it was picked up as a five-day festival by the city of Mattoon, Illinois, to honor Murray Lender. The automation of bagels came about in the 1960s when Harry Lender, Murray Lender, and Florence Sender first developed such a system. Crunchy on the outside yet chewy on the inside, bagels were first brought to the US by Polish Jews. For decades, all bagel bakeries in New York were controlled by Bagel Bakers Local 338.
