The Vision Council sponsors National Sunglasses Day. It seeks to educate people about the importance of wearing shades to protect the eyes from the sun’s harsh ultraviolet(UV) rays. Sunglasses originated in China during the 1100s and in Rome around the second century AD. During the 19th century, syphilis sufferers often wore them due to light sensitivity, but sunglasses didn’t catch on until Hollywood stars began wearing them in the 1920s. Sam Foster was the first to mass produce and sell affordable sunglass in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1929.

Historically, the last two weeks of June see a flood of US Supreme Court decisions posted. TANO FESTIVAL: A VIBRANT CELEBRATION OF KOREAN TRADITION AND SPIRIT Each year in early summer, the city of Gangneung comes alive with a swirl of drums, vibrant costumes, and age-old rituals for one of Korea's most cherished folk festivals – the Gangneung Danoje Festival. Held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, the Tano Festival – or "Danoje" in Korean celebrates fertility, community, and ancestral spirits. Its roots trace back a millennium, intertwining elements of shamanism, Confucian rites, and seasonal agriculture-based customs. Gangneung Danoje has been a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity since 2005. RITES OF RENEWAL AND PROTECTION The festival is a month-long ritual dedicated to appeasing the mountain guardian spirit, or "sansin," Koreans believe protects the region. High priests offer food, wine, and prayers to the spirit in elaborately staged ceremonies to ensure peace, good harvests, and communal prosperity. The Gwanno mask drama is a favorite with tourists. This satirical pantomime featuring traditional masks adds theatrical flair, often lampooning corruption among the ruling class and providing cathartic humor for festivalgoers. FESTIVE SPIRITS ON THE STREETS Outside the shrines, the streets burst with celebration. Crowds gather for traditional wrestling matches (ssireum), swinging competitions, and music performances featuring pungmul drums and bamboo flutes. Women adorn themselves with changpo (sweet flag) in their hair, a custom thought to ward off evil and bring good health. Like most festivals, food is a big part of the celebration. Dano rice cakes crafted from freshly harvested herbs and traditional rice wine (sikhye) feature in the festival's abundance. A BRIDGE BETWEEN PAST AND PRESENT Though rooted in ancient beliefs, the Tano Festival remains a living tradition. Local families and tourists participate in folk games and parades, embracing the timeless rhythms of Korean identity. Schools hold cultural workshops, where children learn to make traditional masks while older generations recall childhood memories of past Danoje seasons. In a modern world where speed often overshadows reflection, the Tano Festival is a reminder of Korea's rich heritage and the enduring power of ritual, nature, and community.
